Silverstone Classic 20-22 July 2012

Silverstone Classic 2012 - The World’s Biggest Classic Car Event!

<o:p> </o:p>

After the fine showing of 240 cars in 2011 the MX-5 Owners Club has again been invited to attend The Silverstone Classic’s 2012 event, which runs from 20th to the 22nd July, thus firmly establishing our marquee as a “modern classic”.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Last year’s event was attended by a record 80,000 people, making it Silverstone’s second largest event after the Grand Prix.  Many enthusiasts consider it better than a GP, since visitors are free to walk around the pits, inspect the cars and chat with their owners.  We were even allowed to wander around the pit lane stand on the pit wall to watch the races – just like in the good old days of Grand Prix!<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

The first key ingredient of this event is a feast of world class nostalgic motor racing, across all decades from the 1920s to the 1990s, featuring over 800 classic racing cars, including such great names as Ferrari, Maserati, ERA and Auto Union; Bentley, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Porsche; Cooper, Tyrell, March, and Lotus, all competing in 20 races over the 3 days, including a Le Mans style dusk race.  The Silverstone Classic is not totally historic, as it includes more contemporary races, such as Group C, Saloons, Super Touring Cars and late Formula One cars being raced and seen in their appropriate surroundings.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

The second key ingredient is the great assembly of classic cars from the extensive list of over 120 Owners’ Clubs across the UK and overseas; over 6000 cars were on display across the event period in 2011.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Both the National paddock area and the new Wing complex will be in use during the event. This greatly increases the size and scope of the event.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

New for 2012! – ‘Gasoline Alley’<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Situated in the Jimmy Brown Centre above the National Paddock garages, this new feature for 2012 provides an area for car club members to gather and meet fellow classic car enthusiasts. The facility will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a set all-day menu to include continental breakfast, buffet lunch and afternoon tea plus cash bar.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Camping<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

This will be in the new Silverstone Woodlands campsite located adjacent to the southern boundary of the venue. Mains showers and toilets are provided in purpose built buildings, and are plentiful. Electrical hook up is also available. Other on site facilities includes general store, pub and secure parking compound. Spaces can be booked when purchasing event admission tickets.<o:p></o:p>

In order to control the volume of traffic arriving and leaving the venue on Saturday 21st July 2012, the total number of Saturday-only tickets available will be limited. Early purchase of these tickets is, therefore, recommended. This restriction will not currently be applied to 2-day or 3-day tickets.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Why has the number of Saturday tickets been restricted?<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

We close car club bookings in advance of the event so that we may better plan for the day and ensure we are able to provide a high level of service to all car clubs, issuing the coordinators and their members with more detailed information prior to their arrival on site. This will include club infield display area location, entrance route to venue – there will be more than one vehicle entrance to the venue in 2012 to ensure that we do not have a repeat of the traffic congestion on the A43 experienced on Saturday morning of the 2011 event – track parades (timings, assembly point arrangements and which clubs participating) and the Silverstone Classic Concours d’Elegance into which one car per club may be entered.”<o:p></o:p>

The
popular ‘Early Bird’ discount tickets are available
until 31st March, 2012 and right now make a great Christmas present.<o:p></o:p>

The
Silverstone Classic this year was a great success with 80,000 spectators and
the exciting news for the July 2012 Silverstone Classic is that it is now
“powered by the AA”.<o:p></o:p>

They have plans for many new elements for the 3 day festival and here are the
details we can tell you now.<o:p></o:p>

The racing will be very dynamic with new grids
featuring the formidable F5000/F2 cars, very close racing from Touring cars
from the 70s-90s era plus the return of the mighty Group C cars as well as over
100 F1 Grand Prix cars and charismatic sports and GT car grids. A feast of
action for the historic racing enthusiast.<o:p></o:p>

1962
was a very innovative year for car design and 50 years later we celebrate the
anniversary of the MGB, AC Cobra, Lotus Elan, Triumph Spitfire & Ford
Cortina. In particular the Cobra celebrations will be the official gathering for
all AC Cobra and derivative owners. Expect to see
500 of them in a track parade as well as battling with the Ferraris and Jaguars
in races.

There
are special celebrations too for the Ferrari F40,
Maserati Merak, TVR Car Club, Mercedes Benz Club, Marcus Owners Club, Renault
Owners & the Chevy Camaro. Another new attraction is the BMW ‘Z’ Fest being
staged for the first time in the UK.<o:p></o:p>

Last
year over 7,000 classic cars were displayed over the weekend so there will be
lots to see.<o:p></o:p>

Live
rock music remains a major part of the fun and is included in the ticket price.
We have top acts on both Friday and Saturday nights Mike and The Mechanics with support bands will
feature on Friday 20th July plus Adam Ant and support bands on Saturday 21st.<o:p></o:p>

This
year many people made it a 2 or 3 day stay and to help people make the most of
the 3 day festival we are introducing a range of overnight accommodation
choices. These range from the high tech ‘Snooze Box’ to Glamping or the massive Woodlands campsite next to the circuit.

 Those
of you who like to visit the many retailers and exhibitors who support the event
will not be disappointed with over 160 exhibitors in the Retail Village with a
huge range of products from antiques and autojumble to vehicles and vintage
clothing. Add to this the traditional Fun Fair, Air Displays and many demonstrations and you
will have flat out fun all day.

The
new ‘Wing’ building at the International pits is a spectacular structure and
will host the Silverstone Auctions sale of classic cars and
memorabilia again in 2012. Another popular aspect of the Wing is its superb VIP hospitality facilities providing the
opportunity for over 1200 guests to be part of the action overlooking the
start/finish line and might be the ideal venue for your family, friends or
business entertaining next year.

The
Silverstone Classic was the first event to incorporate the new Wing complex
with many valuable lessons learned. There will be enhanced transfers between
the North and South of the circuit with double the number of historic buses
running. There will be extra car parks opened with more access roads into
Silverstone and  these measures together with a streamlined ticket
checking system will enhance your experience.

Can one also get the AA discount with the car club tickets?

Does anyone know how the BOGOF works with online purchases?  I entered the club discount code and selected 2 tickets, but the total price came out as the price for two tickets.

Also does anyone know if the camping is booked per person or per tent?  I’m finding the booking site to be a bit misleading :-/

When you enter the code you will notice that the description for the tickets changes and states “(2XENTRY+V/PASS)” - this means you only need to select one in number of these to get 2 tickets and a single car pass

I think the camping cost is per person, I agree it is confusing a little but based on the other charge for children I would guess thats the deal

AA discounts cannot be added as well

Thanks Harco!  I eventually managed to figure it out.  Camping cost is indeed per person.

We’ve just booked this - going up on the Thursday and camping over the weekend - should be fun Smile

I’ve booked for Saturday. Does displaying the car restrict the site entry and exit times? What would these normally be?

You should be able to come and go as you please I think, as you will have a ticket stub. On the Saturday I am usually there all day from 08.00 and then leave about 17.00 to go to the pub for a meal before returning a couple of hours later to the stand for the evening race and concert, which ends about 23.00. Time for sleep then.
