Slow Mk1 Windows

Can someone remind me what lubricant i use down the sides of windows to speed them up a bit? Is it the silicone spray one? Mine have slowed right down again

 Me too please.

And me!!!

A problem shared is a problem… thirded? lol

Use some vaseline…but be aware Mk1 windows are always ssslllllloooooooooooowwwwww

grease up the guides and the cables.

Its quicker to drop the roof than wind the windows down.

Alan

I never have roof up, but in summer I like full airflow so it’s windows down too!

Slow windows:-

1.  Clean the the rubber channels with cotton wool buds after a brief spray with"Holts rubber and nylon lubricant spray".  Then give them a good dose of the spray and run them up and down a few times.  Do not use WD40 or silicone sprays.

No improvement?  Proceed to steps 2, 3, 4 as needed.

2.  Remove door cards, clean channels and then lubricate with white lithium spray grease.  Use a piece of card to keep spray off glass.  Do search for more details.  Check condition of wires that move windows - if frayed, go to step 4.

3.  Clean contacts on window switch.  Again search for details.

  1. Replace wires in doors.

I have just completed this job on my passenger door window as that, for some reason was the one that was always sticking after a few weeks of lubricating it.

I took the door cards off and the polythene damp proof sheet and wound the windows down.      Then I cleaned the rubber window guide with methylated spirit and cotton buds to get the thick gunge out. The top part of the rubber in the quarter light can be eased out so you can see where the rest of the gunge is that you couldn’t get out with the Cotton buds.  When you see this you will realize that the rubber guide below the quarter light inside the door will be the same. So raise the window and with a torch and feeling with your fingers this too can be thoroughly cleaned out. When finished lower the window again.

Using a piece of wood about 600 cm long x 6mm x 8mm aprox with a piece of clean flannelette sheet wrapped once around the stick you can then clean the steel window guide out that the nylon window rollers slide in.

When you look at this guide you will see it is curved in two planes but you can keep the wood strip and cloth in the groove all the way down as the wood strip bends to the curved shape.   Now comes the tricky bit, the lubrication of the slides.  You have to do it with cotton buds, a bit of stick and your fingers.  What lubrication do you use?  This, it is a bit expensive but it will last you for the rest of your life and it is made for the window slides of Honda cars.

I cured mine…Bought a Mk 2.5 lol almost took my arm off first time i shut the window [:D]

Has anyone looked at the difference between the Mk1 and the Mk2/2.5 window mechanisms? Maybe a mod is possible. Wayne???

The strange thing about the windows is that when I had cleaned everything out of both the rubber and the steel grooves, the windows worked but in a juddering fashion. They needed the lubrication for them to work smoothly.

In my other car, a RAV 4, I have never in 8 years of ownership from new, had any window problems.
