Smokey start-up

During recent particularly cold mornings when starting my Mk1 1.6 from cold the exhaust smells heavily as if very rich mixture.  It takes a little while to clear but once warm seems perfectly OK.  Don’t reember it doing this last winter, although we did not have the cold temps we have had this year.  It is not oil as the oil clean and does not need toppig up between changes.  Any sugestions?

What colour is the smoke?

White and it’s not steam.  Smell could be rich petrolly smell.

General rule of thumb ! white smoke is water, blue smoke is oil , browny smoke is fuel , although there is another thread running on here at the moment which was white smoke and turned out to be the gearbox modulator valve.

A relatively simple fix by the sound of it , once the dificult bit , ie diagnosis was done. But this was an auto

If it is only on cold mornings and goes away I wouldn’t worry anyway.
