So why do people still buy Renault and Peugeot etc, when they are supposed to be unreliable?

Actually has, debateably, a sort of old school “classic” chique appeal now. Little if any rot I presume. As usual with Reggy…the wet liner engines were/are bomb proof if… looked after properly.

Certainly no obvious rot- looked great. The guy was using it to carry tools etc- it’s a working vehicle even now

Not as much character as today’s Cr*ptur

I’ve never owned a French car because I’ve been a blinkered German car snob most of my life (until now - thanks Mazda!) but I’ve known people who have had French cars and had a lot of trouble with them. I also think even when they are working, they are a big step down in quality compared to German, Japanese or even Korean stuff. They also seem to try and load them with electronic gadgets that inevitably go wrong.

I’ll counter this by saying you see loads of old French cars soldiering on in Africa living very hard lives!

Why do people still buy them? Most people are clueless about cars and just buy what looks nice to them. Simples.

Or because some of us make informed , eyes open choices. They might be illogical to a pragmatist, but for some of us buying cars is an emotional as well as a rational decision. And falling for lazy stereotypes really isn’t wise . Which is why I loved my 2CV , found my Alfasud Ti a far better car than the Mk 1 Golf GTi I bought to replace it, found a Uno Turbo much more fun than a 205GTi and still very much enjoy my hairdresser’s sports car .

My wife’s Renault Modus is known as Trigger’s Broom, due to the parts we’ve had to replace over the past 14 years, springs are the worst problem she’s broken 6 or 7, I think they must be made of chocolate.

It’s her 2nd Modus, she loves them, but relies on me and my local mechanic to keep it going.

Headlight bulbs are a particular pain, the front bumper (which is basically the front of the car) has to be removed to get to the headlights. It’s a great way to waste 4 hours…

Also though, you aren’t the only person on planet Earth. People might make an ‘informed’ choice not to buy another one/or one in the first place, as that person might have had one/or a family member had one and it was a nightmare. Or read of multitude of issues with them. Indeed, maybe ask the people on this thread who have experienced mass issues with them about ‘lazy stereotypes.’
I haven’t ever bought one, not because I’ve got 1/8 of a brain, but because I’ve read sooooo many ‘lazy stereotypes’ via word and the internet over the years. I recall a Polo I had which was a nightmare with a capital N. No way was I going to listen to lazy stereotypes and internet heroes describing ALL of the issues they encounter with too much frequency for it not to be a concern. If I had, I’d have dodged a bullet.

I actually think that Modus looks quite funky.

Fugly, yes, funky, no.

I used my Renault Avantime for over 3 years as a daily and I can honestly say it never went wrong once. I expected it to give me trouble but it just kept on going. It was an interesting and fun car to own. I paid 3k for the Avi and sold it for the same amount. Sometimes I think I’d fancy another but I think at 10 years older it would be a different story.

Is that a 2000 era car? It looks like (the rear window anyway) like the Megane which was doing the rounds 20 or so years ago.

There’s a red one of those does the rounds at the classic car shows around these parts. Looks quite luxurious inside.

Just behind the Lotus on the right.

Mine was an 04 reg. I think the Megane design was done off the back of the Avi. 2litre turbo petrol, quick enough for the weight. My kids 5 and 3 at the time loved it and plenty of space. Always a conversation starter and genuinely practical. Didn’t take corners well.

There’s some cars in my street (two) who’s alarms have been going on and off all day, maybe due to the sun. Any guesses to the badges?
