solid lifter noise

I have a 2004 Mk2.5 1.8 S-VT.

Looking at the posts I believe my vehicle has solid lifters rather than hydraulic …is this correct…when starting from cold I have a tapping noise for about 20seconds…I have used wynns engine flush and replaced oil and filter…I used mobil 10w 40 semi synthetic oil…the noise has improved although it it is still present on start up from cold…should I make adjustments or leave alon…Neil

I would try Mobil 1 (0W40) - it will flow quicker when cold.  You’re right - the hydraulic tappets (which work brilliantly most of the time, although they occasionally rattle and need flushing) were only on the Mk1.

thanks rogerzilla…is that semi synthetic

No, fully synthetic   … and expensive!  But worth it!

It could be your VVT actuator rattling. I’ve had no personal experience of any problems with them but I think I’ve read about some rattling issues with them.

what is the v v t actuator…is that variable valve timing ?

how do i find out more ?

I hate to say it… but have a look on miata.net

If you know anybody with a cosco card, mobile 1 (0w 40) is £20 plus vat

Yeah Costco is good for oil but they are only the 4L cans, not 5L (in Leeds Costco store). You need every drop of 4L for a oil change (including filter) on a 1.8 engine so you have non to top up.

Sometimes they have the Chevron full synth 5w30 which is ok too…
