Something About Car Insurance That I Didn't Know...

That explains why all the overseas scammers call themselves “John” when they phone you!

Slightly off subject but I thought I would share an experience I had a couple of years ago with LV Insurance,

At the time I had an Audi Q5 (yes I know I Know!)

I had a very minor shunt with a Lady in a Hyundai-a small one, which skidded into my front left hand side and very lightly scuffed the valance, her car however was rather

more damaged and clearly an insurance claim, unfortunately there were no witnesses

After checking she was ok we exchanged details and went on our merry way.

Telephoned LV and advised that due to the minor nature I would undertake repairs myself but wanted to report that the incident had occurred, I was then informed that her insurers were not accepting liability and she

was claiming that it was my fault and she had suffered serious shoulder and neck injuries.

At this point I decided to let the insurers handle everything-thats why we pay for “legal cover” isnt it!, I was shortly contacted by Enterprise to arrange a replacement car while mine was repaired at an authorized repairer

This is where things get crazy!-I was told to collect my replacement vehicle from a local Enterprise depot-I insisted that I didn’t need anything fancy-just a corsa or similar

I was told that I had to have a similar replacement vehicle and they had arranged for me to collect a Range Rover, after much arguing and because I needed to get to work I agreed but fired off an angry email to LV saying that I thought this was deliberately inflating the cost of the claim

Months later I received a letter from Enterprises solicitors -this stated that because the ladys Insurers were disputing the hire costs of the Range Rover which were;

3 days Contract Hire and insurances, addition mileage costs etc etc-£956.00 plus VAT

I was therefore liable for these costs as I had signed the hire agreement

Please be aware if you accept a replacement vehicle from your insurers that if the other party disputes the costs then you could be liable for them, luckily as I had complained at the outset to LV  and stated this they decided that it would not be worth the court battle that would ensue if they had insisted on me paying, I wonder how many other people have been threatened in this way

When I wanted quotes from various companies for car insurance I asked if they could take the courtesy car off as I didn’t need that (I have a second car) no was the answer from most. You can add breakdown, legal cover, and twiddle with the cover in other ways, why not the courtesy car, still a no? Crazy as I was hoping it would bring the price of the  cover down and save costs if I ever needed to claim.

My brother in law had the same problem with a non fault claim which he then ended up with a courtesy car he didn’t need , it was a merc ml brand new as he had an old range rover (like for like )

There was complications with the repairs etc and he ended with the hire car for 28days before he got the range rover back and he was asked to pay the hire  as the insurance companys were still fighting and it came to 13k yep you read it right

he fought and fought and managed to get it down to £1200 pounds but its a warning as above don’t have a courtesy car they can be a rip off .

You’ve got me worried now. I had a car run into the rear of my van at lights on Tuesday morning. Pushed in the bottom of the rear doors and the panel they shut against. His insurance company rang me yesterday to take a few details and asked if I’d need a courtesy van while mine is being repaired. Obviously I will because as much as I love my mk 2.5,there’s not exactly a lot of room for the tools I carry.

The replacement van will be from Enterprise. The other party has admitted liability,so I won’t be expected to pay anything will I?

This is why perfectly good vehicles are written off,as they take into account the curtasy car costs. The last claim I had I was given a fiesta and the mileage limit was 100 miles a week!

I bet the Daily Mail would approve of this.

I’d bet that it was either them, or the Daily Express suggested the idea in the first place.
