speedo thinks its at brands hatch

Help please from anyone with knowledge. Went for a cruise the other day, hood down as you do. In a 30 limit I was very impressed that the speedo read 140mph, so stopped turned engine off and then restarted. Still in the 30 zone speedo reads 80mph then when I accelerated in the 40 zone speedo reached 110mph. Have tried removing and relacing wiring plugs on ecu and instrument binacle in case it is a bad connection, but this did not fix the problem. Anyone had the same problem and how did you cure it. And no I was not speeding.

G’day mate, welcome to the Forum

Assuming you are talking about a Mk1 MX5? The speedo is cable driven, so maybe the inner is catching on the outer casing. Also make sure the cable is properly locked into the back of the instrument, and into the side of the gearbox. Do you know if the instrument binnacle had been removed before the problem started, or have you always suffered with it?

Hi Geoff, Thank’s for the welcome to the forum. This is all new for me. Your quick reply was much appreciated.

The binacle has been removed by me to fit new dial faces and I had thought I connected everything up correctly as I am fussy when it comes to the car with every thing in its place. I will remove the binnacle this weekend to check the mechanical cable connection again. When I changed the faces which was about Christmas time I have used the car quite regularualy and it is only this week that the problem has occured. The mileometer is working adding miles to the clock so I had dicounted the cable as the problem. I will check anyway and keep you informed of progress. The car is a Mk,1 1991 as you have correctly identified. Thank’s again for your your help.

regards
