I’ve had the JR 'charger on the car for about 80 - 90k miles now. Just recently had to change the two pulleys, and had difficulty getting a belt to fit. Finally got a 1218 on, which was on there before so it is definitely the correct size.
However, before one of the pulleys died there was a squeaking from that area which went away on the application of WD40. Now it’s back again, despite new belt and new pulleys and still disappears with the use of WD40.
I’m going to see if I can adjust the pulleys to slacken off the belt as I guess it might be excess lateral pressure, but does anyone have any comments or suggestions?
Did you fit new pulleys from Moss? One of mine strted to make some strange noises so I bought the latets version, I think they have a slight crown to make the belt run in the centre of the pulley. maybe the tensioner is slightly out of alignment
Yes, they are from Moss. Not very helpful telephone staff! They didn’t offer me any later version; do you mean the ones where the whole plate is replaced?
Hi, it took them 3 attempts to get a pulley out to me in Australia, over a 10 week period. I’ve now got two spares. Didn’t replace the whole plate, couldn’t see any good reason to. If I was contemplating a change, this is the one I would go for http://www.trackdogracing.com/website/sc_accessories/tensioner.htm
Yeah, that’s the plate I was thinking about. I’ll investigate the pulleys to see if they are crowned. The belt sits nicely in the middle of the pulleys, so the only thing that I can think is that there is some slight rubbing or unevenness.
Have the same set up as above and had the same problem. Like you I used WD40 (wrong move I was later informed, should only use water spray). Mechanic said the belt had worn although it looked OK so I changed the belt and it improved but the squeel not gone, however after a few miles and the belt bedded in, I tighened the belt and problem solved.
Why not WD40? Is it because if it gets on the belt, it will slip?
I’ve also carefully sprayed some white lithium grease on the pulleys (missing the belt) and it seems quieter. But it’s still there so I’m going to try adjusting the puleys.
I cannot disagree. Even their telesales leaves something to be desired. But there is definitely a gap in the market for a good MX5 specialist in the south/south west, that deals with modifications including FI.
