I would like to fit a full stainless exhaust system to my car. I cannot seem to find any off the shelve exhaust manifolds for a Mk1 1.6L (1996), anywhere on the web.
Anyone able to direct me?
You need to check if the 1996 1.6 has the same catalytic converter as 89-93 1.6 cars. I know 1996 1.8s have a different cat and downpipe from other 1.8s.
If the 96 downpipe is different, manifolds for 89-93 cars may not fit correctly either without modification, or without changing the entire exhaust system.
Plenty of companies sell 4-2-1 or 4-1 manifolds for the 89-93 car, such are MX5parts, Jackson Racing, Racing Beat. MX5parts manifolds are pretty much the same as those sold on ebay, in that they tend to be Chinese-made, and of variable quality The one fitted to my 1.8 might need welding soon, after 2.5 years fitted.
When I bought my 93 V Spec it had been fitted with a S/S twin tailpipe job from the cat back. As the plan is to return it to as near as possible original I have fitted a standard single outlet and filled the cut out and re-painted the bumper. The box and pipe are sitting in the garage waiting for me to put it on ebay in the spring.
Seems you may have the making of a full set!
BTW, if its not aready obvious, the entire system from a 89-93 car will simply bolt onto a 1996 1.6; engines are essentially the same.
Is it possible to keep a stainless steel manifold bright and shiny as it was when new?
How do you get rid of the heat discolouration?
You’ll have to keep polishing I’m afraid.
I don’t know of any laquer or clear coating that will not discolour or burn off with the amount of heat produced.
I used to have a motor bike many moons ago and the bend of the ehhaust from a single cylinder engine used to turn the chrome steel blue and orange.
Someone came up with something called Autosolvyl, or something like that, that was supposed to remove it, but it didn’t
thats the best bit, when it looks like titanium effect… it will only go brown if it gets wet. but when its a shinypurple/blue imho it looks mint
