Stainless Exhaust

Hi All

I have been looking to replace my mild steel system on my MK2 from manifold to rear pipe with stainless, love the sound of a racing beat dual exit but Phil @ Performance 5 explained due to current £ and $ rates will be expensive.

Looked at the system from MX5 Parts, twin exit back box and IL motorsport CAT replacement mega $ plus would have to pay for some one to fit it, so decided to trawl the net.

Have come across a company MIJ Exhausts that specialise in stainless, spoke to Jay and discussed my requirements, they offer a total bespoke system tuned to personal preference, design, noise e.t.c. and with a life time warranty

below is a transcript from there advertisement.

We fabricate OEM patterned stainless steel exhaust systems which save you money over main dealer prices. We custom build a stainless exhaust with a bespoke setup for the individual, with the choice of sound (quiet, midsport, full sport) & looks (single & twin tailpipe styles). Our most popular choice for sound is a midsport setup, this gives the best of both worlds; a non intrusive yet sporty note.

Our custom performance exhausts are all built in T304 stainless steel & come with a lifetime guarantee. Our cat-back exhaust system (mid & rearsection) can increase your cars performance by upto 10bhp, sports car exhaust setups can increase more than this.

Freeflow Design for More Power & Efficiency!

Replace it ONCE never again!

We work together with you using our simple & effective steps:

1. Your vehicle is driven onto the ramp & your current exhaust system is removed.

2. Discussion & walk through of the exhaust setup & selection of tips to suit the rear.

3. Complete fabrication of the exhaust system to the discussed spec (approx 2 hrs).

4. A walk through with you of the new exhaust setup & Photo’s for web also taken.

5. Finally your complete satisfaction, paperwork completion & your ready to go…

Feel free to relax in our comfortable lounge or to roam the town centre (approx 10 minutes walk). A typical cat-back system which comprises of a middle & rearsection takes no longer than a couple of hours from start to finish.

All our custom exhausts are free-flowing, that means there are minimal restrictions within our exhaust silencers. Your standard
exhaust system will have restrictions within the exhaust boxes, these are known as baffles & chambers, one of the aims of this type of exhaust box is to reduce the sound level with intersections & sound absorption material. This gives a negative effect on the travelling direction speed of the gases; causing them to slow down & delaying the process hence the performance gain with our free-flow exhaust.

Our exhaust system is built & setup accordingly to suit your car model, various research & development techniques have been put into place by us to give your car the best exhaust setup. With consideration to engine capacity & engine modifications we come up with an exhaust system for your car to suit & perform perfectly. Performance gains are noticeable with all our sports exhausts.

Its not just about replacing your exhaust, what we aim to achieve at MIJ is complete customer satisfaction. We advise & share our experience to give you a superb exhaust system with all the added benefits…

Have decided to go ahead and will be getting my system fitted this Saturday, will take pics at various stages and will enquire regarding offering the OC a discount.

can’t say at this stage costs but just to say very … very competitive, will keep you updated over the next weekend but can’t wait to have a 5 that sounds as it should do.

Zippy. Yes

Very interested Zippy,

Would like to see pics when you have it finished, I am looking for a stainless bespoke system myself.

Hi

Had my stainless steel exhaust manufactured and fitted today by www.mijperformance.com the service was first rate and the staff very friendly and I was made very welcome.

This is a performance centre dealing in clutches, suspension, engine upgrades, brakes, etc.

Initial phone conversations with Jay culminated in my requirements being a down pipe (manifold to cat), Hi flow Catalytic Converter, mid box, then onto rear silencer with twin exit tail pipes, the rear silencer being a mid sport, as I wanted to hear the exhaust but not too loud.

I had my old system removed and then Jay’s team went to work with the bespoke system, I was asked at various stages for my views and choices on different aspects of my requirements.

The 1st time I was consulted was to show me the original link pipe, Jay inspected it and advised me it was like new so would still have several years of life, so the choice was mine whether to replace with stainless.

I took Jays advise and left it on, sometime later I was then asked for my choice on tailpipes large, small, round oval e.g., I made my choice of the large oval the Jay advised he would have to cut both sides of the lower bumper to accommodate my choice.

The bumper modifications were made to a very high standard and highlight my choice of tailpipe.

I was informed that after the work was complete and I found the noise not to my liking then they would alter the system until I was satisfied whether to make it noisier or quieter, customer satisfaction is there priority.

The system took 4 hours to fit but they do have a nice lounge area with TV and a tea van on the premises selling burgers etc, once the system was fitted I was asked to inspect and listen to see if I was satisfied.

OOOOOOH! The sound is awesome, the quality of work excellent and I can recommend them highly.

The Cost.

Mk1 or 2 the price is the same.

Down Pipe £140:00

Hi Flow Sports Cat £160:00

Single Exit Cat Back £300:00

Twin Exit Cat Back £344:00

All above is fitted and MIJ will allow Club members a choice of tailpipes normally charged extra and an additional 10% discount. Ask to see Jay’s 1152HP Skyline !.

The images below show the premises and my MX5.

In Progress

And Finally

Sounds like[excuse deliberate pun[;)]] a really good win win result! Price is pretty good and the attention to detail and customer care sounds excellent too…enjoy

Hi Zippy,

It looks to me that you have chosen exactly the same system, (twin outlet) as I intended to have. It appears to be a quality system as well from the photo. Will have to save my pennies for a bit longer yet to get the complete system though.

Mozza

[Y] congrats zippy, it looks the nutz, bet it sounds awesome @ 6500rpm!!!, goochie

I’m off to MIJ tomorrow to have a new backbox on my Mk3. It definitely ought to sound more sporty than it does and they seem very professional based on what has been said above. They are offering me a backbox with twin exit and a choice of exhaust ends for £174 all inclusive. This includes a club discount apparently.

Considering that the cheapest replacement sporty backbox systems I have seen online start at £400 then this is a much cheaper alternative. Once I have had it done, I’ll report back and let you know what I think of the service and the new exhaust.

Did they cut a bit out of the bumper to make a twin fit?

Sorry just noticed the answer is in the text.

This does look good, but at £640 if I am reading this correctly is far from cheap. Personally I dont see the need for stainless forward of the cat as mild steel has a very long life in this application, but each to their own!!!

Hi Dave P

your correct your NOT reading it, as my original quotes MIJ inspected the down pipe or link pipe as they called it and advised me not to replace, I paid £500 for my system but I did not need to climb under my car or pay additional money to have it replaced, the system was fitted at the quoted price.

I see you to have a 1999 mk2 so are fully aware of cost involved with replacing just the CAT " look on mx5 parts the free flow CAT and pipe is £478,thats without the rear twin section and then fitting it, but as you say “each to their own”

Zippy.

Ok, so I had the new rear silencer fitted today, and it’s far from silent.

The whole job took them about 2hrs 30mins, but they seemed very efficient and proffessional (even the guy hammering a torsion bar with a sledgehammer on an old Saxo  ) It cost me £192 in the end as they had some new end pipes in which were an additional cost to my original quote.

Sound wise, it’s a very deep burble now when I start the engine and it’s got a much more sportier sound overall. I went for the mid-sport option as opposed to full sport. I have taken some quick snap shots with my phone (apologies for the poor quality).

But I quite like crawling underneath! Yes I am aware of the replacement cat and pipe due to the odd design of the mk2 exhaust especially as I feel my pipe and cat are not long for this world!! But a bit of searching revealed an exhaust supplier (several in fact) that will sell the cat and link pipe for around £130. Its in 2 pieces, so is easier to fit than the original one piece item, so that with my Moss back box gives me a complete exhaust for less than £300 and the chance to use my air impact wrench to free off the rusty nuts!!!

Any chance of letting us know where you can get a cat and link pipe for £130

Thanks

Ian

if you dig around with google there are a couple of exhaust specialists outside ebay that have these parts for similar prices…

Zippy! Great report and yes what good service. Have taken your advice and have now had fitted the exact same system. Pictures to follow. Well done. Car looks good and now sounds like a mean machine especially when worked hard through the gears. Just get a bit of a heavy drone low down but love the system. may go back and speak to Jay re adding a small box to intermediate pipe if that helps elliminate the drone if not i am sure we can live with it.

Best regards Itallino

i got my stainless manifold, off ebay, due to an error on pricing for £53.00 Delivered (name of shop: 2fast2cool)

Borla Twin Exit back box £200 (on offer from Moss MX5)

and the midsection from C.E.S Auto parts £170

the manifold has made the most difference (might just be me…) noise and power delivery so much better even on a STD system, as for the backbox, it was most def worth the 4week wait, whislt they made more and delevered them over to the UK and just simply finishes the back of the car off (look on YouTube: MACKERS8578… thats me) and yes the back box really took 45mins to fit… including the cutting of the bumper to allow the “new” 2nd tailpipe to be shown.

Hi, your report about the system is excellent, however can you tell me where the company is based. I live in East Kent and it may take hours to reach the company. Thanks

Hi All,

Has anyone had a SS backbox system fitted at MIJ recently? I was thinking about getting one done on our MK3 I’d like something similar to what Modey had got. I was hoping it would be around the £200 mark for just the backbox but when I called MIJ I was quoted £275 for just the backbox which seems a lot more than what I was hoping. If anyone has had their Mk3’s done recently how much did it cost?

Thanks,

MalithS
