A slightly notchier gear change and audability of the change from the gearbox suggest to me that the 'box oil lever is a bit low.
Do they tend to leak a bit or should I worry (85k miles).

It is worth remembering that the cold weather at the moment will have a big impact - is it just as bad after it has warmed up properly (20-30 minutes)?

It’s worth getting the oil changed, if you haven’t done it it’s probably the '97 stuff still in there. Also have a look at this link http://mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/201.aspx this is a common problem for stickey changes and a bit of a clunk
