Stuck header flange bolt need help

  1. My model of MX-5 is: nc 07 2.0
  2. I’m based near: ldn
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: flangs bolt removal

So i installed a new midpipe 2 ish months ago, one bolt came out fine and i couldn’t get this one out and i just used a sealer and it finally broke and i’m now addressing the exhaist leak. But how the hell does this one come out?? The other side has a brand new bolt and spring and i have one for this side too but i could never get this out i need help asap

If you have a dremel or grinder id cut it off and replace the bolt, will take seconds to do.

i do but it’s freezing and then id still have to somehow get it out the manifold flange

Is that bolt captive to the manifold or loose? If its loose its a 10 minute job, yeah it is baltic out atm so it wouldnt be very nice to do but if it needs doing which it looks like it does then a grin and bear it attitude will have to do

captive indeed, the other one was loose and came out beautifully i remember, i might have to take the manifold out tho and drill it out but i’m leaving that for when temps get warmer i thought i’d give it a shot again and nope, just used the chance however to install the lower strut bar back in, while there’ll be an exhaust leak it is extremely minor and doesn’t bother me, and i’ve got MOT til novemeber so definitely leaving this for now, ■■■■■■ defeated me

Thats a pain, it might well be easier to drill it out with the manifold still on the car as I believe the manifold is a p.i.t.a to remove, you’re not wrong to leave it till the slightly warmer weather, it would be grim doing it in these temps outside laying on a damp cold floor.

indeed, it’s really not a big deal as i’ve got til novemeber for mot, and i’ve got another issue to worry ab which is i’ve got 3/4 suspension corners lowered coz the final one also wanted to have a captive bolt on the suspension arm so 1 corner sits higher and i’m waiting for a blow torch and Massive metre long breaker bar  thanks for the help tho

Good luck with that last corner mate hope it doesn’t turn in to a nightmare of a normal what should be an easy job.

I will be replacing the centre pipe and manifold on my nc in a few months as the centre pipe is knackered, going for a full malian system :ok_hand:

Two nuts on the threaded nip them together fit ring spanner on with a long pribar give you more leverage crack it off……

That looks like a captive stud, welded to the flange. It has a shoulder to prevent over-tightening the spring. The Mellens drawing shows two captive studs on the manifold flange.

Was that an old photo and it’s now broken? If so, then the easy option is dremel to cut it flush and then drill out the residue.

Yes, this, there doesn’t look to be anything wrong with that stud, can’t you just put the spring and a nut on it?

Best bet. I had this problem when replacing the manifold. Ended up having to cut bolt but was not a problem as was replacing the manifold. Could you just re tap the bolt and leave the bolt in the manifold?

Probably, was told to use a thread chaser so ill try it out as my new manifold bolts i bought dont fit on which is annoying, but its prob due to rust between the threads

If you can resurrect the existing bolt id go for that. Getting the manifold out for me was a bigger job -ideally 2 person and heat shield bolts very challenging. Even after that I still couldn’t get my ceased manifold bolt out -even on the bench . But as I was replacing the manifold it was not an issue .(maybe an excuse for you to get a new header :+1::joy:)

Yeah if in doubt just get a malian header (other makes are available)
