Switchback LEDs Query

Always liked the idea of using switchback LEDs in place of my indicator bulbs so you have the white running lights and the brighter indicator lights, and brings the lighting a bit more up to date…

Got a pair of eBay, I think recommended on another forum post and got them installed and wired in, fairly easily.

Gave them a test and all seemed ok, but when I put on the hazards on the drivers side switches to the orange and flashes.. the passenger side doesn’t, well, you can see the orange LEDs flicker, but not as they should..

Could it just be that side LED and the module are dodgy and just needs replacing…? I think it was only £15 for the pair so cheapish if I need to buy another pair…

Any suggestions ?

I have had a number of LEDs either fail or be dead on arrival. First two I tried yesterday were duds :frowning: However, when you get a good set, the lighting is way better and less juice on the wires, so def worth it in the end.

Ordered another pair so hopefully one will be ok..

also noticed they don’t go off when I turn the headlights on, low or high beam…

is that a problem…?

I had a couple of similar issues.
Firstly, regarding your passenger hazard light problem. For my NB neither amber light would flash properly unless the engine revs were higher than idling. I found that the voltage at each amber bulb was only about 9.5 volts when the alternator wasn’t kicking in. That was enough to drive the original incandescent bulbs but not the LED circuitry. The battery voltage by the way was about 12.6 volts, rising to 14.4 volt on charge. I suspect it was a dodgy 25 year old flasher relay. As I wasn’t supple enough to wriggle upside down under the dashboard and remove the flasher relay, I simply added a relay to each amber LED in the engine bay using the existing amber feed to drive a relay that powered the amber LED from an unswitched 12v supply. Maybe you could just try increasing the engine revs to see if yours has the equivalent problem.

Secondly, for turning the DRLs off, I used a standard auto 5 pin relay to break the DRL power connection when the sidelights were on using the common & normally closed terminals. So either dipped beam or main beam will power the white DRL off. I think the DRL feed wire from memory was white, but it could be red. I’ll have to check that in the morning.

[EDIT] I’m pretty sure the fused feed wire with my kit is red and not white.

See the diagram below

Well I’ve tried all sorts of combinations but no matter what I do these LEDs just don’t work as I want them too.

They either come on and stay on, even when turning the headlights on. They come on for 30 secs and then go off, or don’t come on to start with and then come on with the headlights..

I already have the DRL/fog kit from IL Motorsport installed, but wanted the get these switchbacks working as well..

Even tried tapping into the feeds used for the DRL/fogs, but they wouldn’t turn off when putting the headlights on..

I’m certainly no automotive electrician so could easily be doing something wrong but I can’t see why this should be so difficult to get working…

Will run through everything again tomorrow but if still no joy may have to accept defeat and just leave the LEDs in to act as indicators in place of the old bulbs…

frustrating…..

Well I decided to go down the 5 pin relay route, and within 5 minutes had it all working as it should be, typical…

certainly should have gone that way to start with :+1:
