The TV Licence

Was ‘Frozen’ for 2 years, meaning literally every house hold in the UK had to pay the ‘frozen’ fee, even if they don’t watch of listen to the BBC. It is no longer ‘frozen’, meaning literally every house hold in the UK have to pay even more money, even if they don’t watch or listen to the BBC.

I feel like you don’t really understand the tv licensing model - you keep using the word literally. If you don’t watch live broadcast tv and don’t watch content on iplayer, you don’t need a tv licence. Literally.

I still enjoy the BBC and happy to pay the license fee. Plenty of variety and some excellent history, drama and science programmes.; A House Through Time, Digging For Britain, Silent Witness are good examples off the top of my head. I also watch BBC News and some music programmes on BBC 4. There’s quite a few programmes and entertainment shows that don’t appeal, which is to be expected…we’re all different. BBC iPlayer gets a lot of use and I’m currently enjoying Life on Mars again, having watched it a few years ago. I watch other channels of course and channel 4 is pretty good too. The BBC doesn’t always get it right and there have been a few unsavoury scandals recently, but overall it gets the thumbs up from me.

Yes …you are correct [just checked my DD schedule] and the Licence Fee has been unfrozen and will increase from £159 to £169.50 w.e.f. April 2025 …so divided by 365 days in the year is about 46.43p per day AND they don’t charge extra if you pay by DD [spread the cost in other words] as some orgs do [e.g. Vehicle Tax]
And much as us non celebs might say ‘ow much’ ?!?! in terms of salary when I watch a programme like ‘The Wheel’ which is amusing and the questions test what are remaining of me ‘likkle grey cells’ and a deserving contestant walks away with £Thousands of Life Changing Money

I think to myself that my Licence Fee has contributed to that persons happiness and helped in making a significant difference in their lives

I understand ND12 that paying for something you don’t use is extremely frustrating to say the least
[e.g. me and Sky charging me for Sky Go until I protested]

Surely there must be a process whereby folk who don’t avail themselves of BBC services can opt out of the Licence Fee ??

And if there isn’t…perhaps you could raise this with the BBC and provide a solution for fellow posters on this Thread ??

All the information on cancelling is contained in the MSE article I linked to?

It’s really simple and straightforward - if you don’t use services linked to the TV license, then don’t pay it! Not sure how many other ways this can be said??

Where you’re money goes. Some interesting ones on that list who get some of your money, huh

Why do license payers contribute the primary source of BBC funding, and the ‘stars’ salaries, if you don’t watch or listen to it?

Now this thread has become circular so time to close it, the same people making the same argument in the hope of a reaction.

If you don’t use the services the route to cancel is clearly signposted.
