Throatier twin exhaust fitting

I’m going to need a replacement rear box soon and have been thinking about possibly getting a twin exhaust system. I’d like something with a little more beef to it without being ridiculous ( a matter of opinion I know!)

Can anyone suggest some decent systems that aren’t too expensive or some single pipe systems that may fit the bill. Also would it be worth getting EMG or another dealership in the Eastern region to fit it ( especially if there’s cutting out to be done)

I’m based in Ipswich but work all over and am often in Cambridge ( hence the EMG reference)

Thanks

bought mine from MX5 parts.co.uk for £224.  Was worried about cutting a perfectly good bumper but it was easier than I had thought.  Then it snowed so I had to wait for 3 weeks to fit it.  In the end I could not be bothered to roll around on the floor in the snow so had it fitted for £50.  Worth it definitely for the look and the sound.

Cutting is a doodle took 10 minutes when I fitted the 5parts one to the MK1 and 5 minutes fitting the the Racing Beat to the MK2.

If you look on the Racing Beat website there are really easy to use templates to download.

I’m a closet skin-flint so went for MX5Parts own twin SS…plus the cat bypass (for track days only of course!)

The sound with the cat on is pretty gentlemanly but when the bypass is on there is a real grumble to it, our moggies run a mile when I start the car!!!

I’ve also had a SS header fitted which gives a nice rumble straight from the exhaust ports which linked into a K & N intake gives the whole package a really sporty tone. Not everyones cup of tea, certainly not Mrs E’s but my boss has a TVR and he has complemented me on the sound of mine!!!

As for cutting the bumper, the exhaust came with a template that I stuck onto the bumper, then I just heated a stanley knife with our camping stove and it went straight through without leaving any untidy edges…possibly not the usual method but worked for me!

Was about to ask the same question myself, but I'm after a single pipe.

Have recently fitted the K&N typhoon induction kit to my Mk 2 - which sounds great when the throttle's open - but it needs to be complemented by a nice little burble from the exhaust on overrun.

Anyone recommend a Mk 2 pipe for a nice noise (but not too loud)?

longlife fitted mine ,you can also listen to the sound before they finish it off ,with different size cans i had this double ss fitted to mine and cat removed

Wooaaah, they’re a big ol’ pair a pipes, bet they purr quite nicely. I’ll scout around a bit and get some prices. Unfortunately as my 5 is my daily drive I doubt I can afford to have it off the road long enough for me to do the work…the money spent on the fitting can be recouped by the work I can do by having my car off the road for as short a time as possible.

I may scour YouTube to see if I can find some clips of various systems in use, though I’m not sure quite how much you can really tell from them?![*-)]

Can I put video into here? I caught Master E revving the hell out of the (cold) engine in the garage…he was about to get the rollocking of his life till he explained he was videoing the new exhaust to show his mates the noise!

If I can I’ll put it on, just the cheapy MX5Parts twin via a SS header and cat bypass but sounds pretty good…

Here is a video put on Youtube by Fergyuk of the MX5parts twin exhaust…

Having watched that…and various others all I know is that I can’t get a sexy burbling sounding exhaust fast enough…and I still don’t know which one is best for me!!! Worst of all I followed the links to another video with some guy driving his IL Motorsport equipped 5 back and forward through a tunnel - I don’t live near any tunnels so I’m going to have to move house as well!

I reckon I will probably go for the MX5 Parts SS Dual Exhaust for £288. There’s only one review on their site of this system but it seems to be a good sound and a good price. Hopefully…

The MX5Parts twin pipe makes a fantastic noise!

Hopefully this will work…

This is the cheapy MX5Parts one…well worth the money IMHO…

They all sound great - but they’re all for Mk 1s.

The MX-5 parts twin pipe for Mk 2s has only one review - and it’s not very good.

Howe different are they? Is it possible to fit a Mk 1 exhaust to a Mk 2?

That review is a bit vague - re. the power loss, it’s probably psychological - I have the twin pipe on mine I tend to drive using less throttle most of the time because as it’s loud it sounds like you’re going faster, so then you look at the speedo and you’re doing a lot less than you thought.

Looking at the pictures it looks like the inlet pipe to the main silencer is at 45 degrees facing to the right on the mk2 version, whereas it faces straight back on the mk1 version. Also the exit pipe lengths look different, as it the silencer box is shifter to the left relative to the centre line of the car on the mk2. If one would fit both cars then the company wouldn’t waste money making 2 slightly different versions of what is essentially the same pipe, so it undoubtedly wouldn’t fit without some major mods.

So many people are happy with the mk1 version I think you’re pretty safe to order what is almost the same thing for the mk2. IIRC there is a review on the mk1 version saying it was too loud and the guy hated it and sent it straight back - some people just like different things. If there were 50 reviews all giving it 3 stars or less then that would be different.

OK, didn't realise it was essentially the same thing.  Think I will go with that then when the time comes.

Cheers guys.
