Timing Belt

Yes that’s my point , the search function is better than looking stupid and asking

I know bit a out it’s suggested probably a very good idea to change the auxiliary belt, idler pulley and tensioner, wondered when that should be done

Blimey!

If the belt looks tired and worn/cracked then change it of course.
One of my pulleys started squeaking (the tensioner one) so I changed all of them and the belt too. I wouldn’t really be concerned until they get noisy or as said the belt looks past it’s best.

Interesting competance levels no doubt, always met them when i ran the CluB GTI in N Ireland, there were guys there who could chat fairly lively on all aspects of maintenence quoting books and internet savvy yet hadn’t the spanner savvy to clean out a cam box filter… no matter what i speak of is the later engines oil burning running bearings issue highlighted to me when i called with a local chap who sells cars, is a fully fledged experienced technican rallies and sprints an mx5 as does one of his sons.I was of the opinion that these were ford units modded by Mazda duratec motors , a local Rallye car builder who uses all sizes of these units in 300 + hp Escorts etc says they are very tuneable which when i heard of the issues the local garageman was having was sort of dismayed when compared to the not very normal tuneable 1.6 and 1.8 motors which go on for years without many bad wear issues , the newere cars owners don’t look after the oil levels was his opinion, now i like a dip stick and my old 04 Benz doesn’t have one but tells me when i need to add a litre of lube, doesn’t Mazda have this sorted… will… apologies if slighty off topic…
