towing an auto

May be a stupid question  is it possible? Do you just pop it in neutral and tow as normal?

If I did it would only be for a mile or 2 at slow speeds…

Thanks,
Mark

Nope, you can’t tow it I’m afraid.

The damage to the gearbox could be terminal, so it is not something that you want to do.

The only sensible option is a fully suspended tow, or you could risk lifting the rear wheels & towing it backwards…

If you want to tow an Automatic vehicle with all four wheels on the ground, then you must disconnect and remove the propshaft first.

You can tow an Auto but only for for a short distane and at slow speeds. If you stay under 25 m.p.h. then a couple of miles will be no problem.

This presumes that you haven’t got a problem with the transmission.

I think that’s sound advice.  I think towing damage to an auto arises though causing the transmision oil to overheat (and blowing seals?) as it is constantly churned.

Just googled this one - no more than 50 mph and 60 miles is ok. (quotes from car handbooks)
