Toyo T1R 195 55 14 Wrong for the car ?

I just had some Toyo T1R 195 55 14 tyres fitted to my Mk1 as so many people here seemed to suggest they were a good tyre.

I ordered these online from Value tryes to be fitted at a local agent. The garage that fitted them was very off ( I guess they make little money on these sales). They insisted that the tyres were the wrong size for the car and wrote this in red all over the invoice. I have only had 2 fitted as the old tryes were just about on the limit. I will change the other 2 in  couple of weeks when I get the car back from the body shop ( long story), so accept it is not a good idea to have different tyres as I do at the moment.

My concern is any potential issue with insurance if I have 195/55/14 tyres fitted rather than the standard 185/60/14

Comments?

why didn’t you go for the 185 60 14 that you would normerly get on a MX5 14 inch wheel ?

I don’t think you can get Toyo T1-R’s in that size any more Martin…I’ve been looking. They do CF1’s which I am considering at the moment.

195/55R14 will be 3.75mm lower ride height and 1.3% lower gearing (if on the rear) compared to the standard 185/60R14. Nothing too drastic as long as you don’t have ABS - having different rolling radii on a car that should have identical tyres all round can lead to early onset ABS. Get the same size fitted all round ad you’ll be fine.

My MX5 currently has 195/50 R15 on the front and the rears vary between 175/55R16, 185/60R14, 185/55R15 and 195/50R15. My insurance company are very aware of this. The change to handling can be extreme so I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if your 185s aren’t as sticky as your new 195s.

Captain Muppet, with that levet of knowledge, you are misnamed.

You’ve piqued my curiosity - why so many variations?

It’s a drift car so I use what I can get. When tyres last less than a couple of hours you can’t afford to be choosy [:D] My rear tyres normally cost £5 or less.

I mostly use sensible sizes on the road, but my insurance company has the same list just in case I need to get home from an event on the wrong tyres.

I’ve seen a lot about the Toyo T1R’s but have found a alloy / tyre deal with Toyo T1S.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

Are they budget Toyo’s?
