Track tyres

 Hi
iam looking for a  new set of tyres which will be good both on and off the track. I have considered the toyo t1r’s and a couple of others but iv heard the t1r is quite soft and wears quickly. any help or opinions would be welcome.[:D]

Toyo R888’s track tyres and buy a spare set of wheels… the only way.

cheers. ive looked at those tyres and have heard they are good track tyres but is there none that would do for both track and road which are sort of midway level for both uses?

Cheers

From what I’ve heard the Hankook RS-2s are the closest thing around at the moment.  They combine a fairly soft compound for dry days with enough tread depth to avoid aquaplaning and cope with wet conditions.  I don’t have any personal experience with them though and they seem to be in short supply currently.  This might be because they are being replaced by the RS-3 soon.
I guess it comes down to how far you want to take your trackdays. It seems like most people who really get into it end up using proper trackday tyres like the 888s at some point down the line.

I do loads of track days and several ring trips a year.

The Toyo R888 are good track tyre

The Federal 595RS are a good cheaper alternative but just as good on track

The Hankook RS2 is a good in between tyre  road / track

And the Toyo T1R and Goodyear Eagle F1 are good all round road tyres.

When you say the wear on the T1R isnt great, it all depends of what use they have, as on track they cannot cope with large heat cycles, and will melt!

 General road use are fine.

You need to decide what you want from a tyre! Most Track tyres are not very good in the wet…  trust me i know!  1’C and R888 = Drifting around corners and roundabout! and not intentionally!   ahhahahahahhah

I guess it all depends on how much you want to compromise your safety on road for the ‘ultimate’ track experience?  It also depends on your budget.

I personally wouldn’t run specialist track tyres like R888 on the road regularly (maybe to/from events).
I did trackdays for years on standard road tyres and never had any significant problems with them overheating - you just have to drive accordingly and remember that you’ve got to get back home.
In 2008, I ran the following tyres on my car: Marangoni Zeta Linea (current choice), Eagle F1s, Toyo T1-R, Pirelli P6000, Toyo R888.
The R888 are by far the best track tyre but are far too expensive for trackdays in my opinion - nobody cares if you’re half a second a lap faster and nobody will notice.  In my view, the less grip the better for trackdays - I often stick the P6000s on because they last for ever and make a great squeal noise as you powerslide round the corners [;)]
