ummm it would only be a good turbo conversion, if your prepared to cut a hole in the bonnet and obstruct the passengers view with a turbo and associated pipework (the 323 turbo manifold puts the turbo way above the engine line
I think you would have to be quite brave to take this on [8-)]
no you’d be stupid it’s a complete non starter, the bloke has only said mx5 to shift it because the 323 and the 5 share the same engine
Well that’s what I meant but I didn’t want to appear rude [H]
Any thoughts on the Begi Shanghai kit. The arrival of this kit has completely changed my plans.
On the face of it, it seems I can get a kit with Megasquirt PnP for under $2k plus shipping. I’m not sure what the deal is with MX5Mad, since they no longer stock Begi kits.
I’m keeping an eye on how the first users get on with this, but it seems Corky Bell has performed some pretty detailed testing of his selected Chinacharger.
Re the above:
As we all know from experience the chinese stuff has massively varying quality.
I’d buy one IF they agreed to cover ALL costs should the turbo disintergrate and take your IC / engine with it.
However I’d very much doubt they would do that.
I’d prefer to buy a kit without the turbo and source a good used one.
I believe the deal with mx5mad with regards to BEGi is they’ll order it and get it shipped for you, but the cost depends on how the exchange rate is when you buy it! (which as we know is pretty crap and fluctuating all the time)
Give Karl a bell i’m sure he’ll be helpful
How would you know a used turbo is “good”. My understanding is that the compressor casing gradually develops micro-cracks. Additionally, the vanes are aluminium, and if they broke off, at least according to Corky, would just burn up in the combustion chamber, assuming they got that far. I notice the warranty on these systems is the same as on other Begi kits.
It seems Corky is commissioning metallurgy checks on the tubos he has sourced. I think I’ve pretty much tracked down his suppliers, who seem to be a bone fide outfit with links to Holset (Cummins).
It seems to me these kits are at least as good as a used kit (which has no warranty). Not seen any real evidence, on my searches, that these Chinese turbochargers, at least those made in the last few years, have a higher failure rate than from other sources. I’ll keep researching.
Do they have their own pricing, or is it pretty much the Begi prices, plus reasonable shipping.
Because, if the former, I can get this kit sent to a US address, and then arrange for it to be shipped.
Wouldn’t mind a gander at your system sometime. I might be at the Melton event at the end of April.
There have been a couple of scathing remarks on the Australian forum about the quality of workmanship on some of the stuff these guys churn out

Theres a melton event?
Last friday evening of every month, starting friday; classic and sports cars park up on the pedestrianised area. There’s a topic on NEM about this. Think Neil is finding out if its still happening. Interesting and eclectic mix. Not quite Ashby Folville, but they are making an effort.
This doesn’t discuss in particular the “TBO” turbos they are using for some kits.
I realise that Andy, it was just a general heads up on the quality of work that sometimes comes out from that company
Forever MX5 had a review of the Begi-S kit, which is essentially the same except for the turbo, and thought the kit was of excellent quality.
Sounds like you have convinced your self. If you fancy a Supercharger, Ian Oliver has one for a 1.6 over on the old list

Not at all, I am specifically lookng for any info on the Chinacharger kit. When FM produces such a kit, I’ll also be asking around about that.
No doubt the supercharger kit is overpriced.
They’ve had minor quality control issues, in sending out the wrong parts a few years back…but i was impressed with the box that arrived at my doorstep The workmanship on the components of the BEGi stuff is second to none!
