Twin exhausts and insurance

My Eunos finally passed the MOT after 4 visits to the test centre so I’m going to treat it to an MX5Parts twin exhaust (it already has a decat pipe as the cat fell to pieces).

I’m currently insured with Adrian Flux - would I need to declare the exhaust swap and what would the likely premium increase be? I’ve heard from people in the past that Flux are normally quite good with upgrades?

Declare it, thats the safest way with all mods.

I am with Adrian Flux and don’t know what the uplift is for having mods as I declared mine when initially insuring.

All I know is they were still cheaper than elsewhere, I used to be a bit naughty and ‘forget’ to declare mods [:$]

I want to declare it properly as otherwise there’s not much point in having insurance, best give them a ring tomrrow.

Anyone know just how loud these twin pipes are? I don’t want a Max Power pipe that’s just a bass boom.

The reviews on MX5 Parts website for their twin exhaust are probably pretty representative of opinion…with a high percentage of favourable responses. I have had one fitted for a couple of hundred miles and it certainly isn’t quiet particularly when you accelerate hard…which is fine! My only minor irritation is that it is slightly boomy around 3000 rpm which is around 60 mph in 5th and particularly so under load going up hills. I’m hoping that it will get a bit better with a few more miles on it…it is certainly better than it was when first installed. Hard to beat at the price I reckon.

Hi Jim,

I have this exhaust fitted and it sound the dog’s B*******ks!  Can be a bit boomy when roof up but never intrusive. It does not sound like a boy racer but purposeful.  I live in Stafford, not sure where you are but very welcome to meet and hear/see fitment. I have NEVER regretted it and it sounds great on a track day!!

Regarding insurance, I am with AON and only have an induction kit fitted other wise. i declared this as well and the exhaust and the power gain is less than 5% so there was not increase what so ever on the premium and it is on the policy documentation.

Hope this helps but mail me or can give you phone number if you want a chat.

Thanks Phil, I now have a twin exhaust sat in a box in my kitchen ready to fit - I hope it’s as good as you say it is!

Checked with the insurance co. and they don’t care about the exhaust, no effect on the premium at all - excellent! (and a first for an insurance co. in my experience!)

Excellent. DOn’t be put off by the pathetic cut out sheet they give you for the left hand pipe. It looks useless however it does work!

I took pics while doing mine. If you want they drop me your email address in a PM.

I did cheat however! I cut all the bumper out then could not undo the centre pipe nut, it was stuck fast. So went to local exhaust centre and they fitted it for £15. £15 VERY well spent!

Have fun.

Thanks Phil, I’ve PMed you my email, if you could send me pics of how you positioned the cutout that would be very helpful.

I think the centre/rear heat shield on the old pipe is in a few rusty rattly pieces, so I’m thinking of removing it completely and fitting the new pipe with no heat shield (the front one is already gone when I fitted a new downpipe).

Did you refit the shield to your exhaust? I don’t think I need it but I’m not 100% sure, I can’t imagine it’s there for any safety reasons just to cut down on heat transmission into the car?

Here’s mine recently fitted…well pleased!

Well despite the snow I fitted the pipes today (quote surreal being right under the car as it snowed all around) and then took it for a quick blast, and by god the sound is incredible!!! It has quite a boom at about 1500 to 2000 rpm which I hope will soften a bit as the pipes bed in and soot up but once past that point it sounds really snarly and just great. The car needs an oil change so I’ve not been beyond about 4000 rpm yet.

Larini, 100mm dual exit…it’s the only way to go. I told Adrian Flux…but no added premium

Dual exits…only way to go…

Try TRIPLE exhausts EACH side for that sportier look (see pic on left)

Yes, that would look great on the cover of Max Power : )

pics please! having mine done sunday!

Mentioned my intention to fit a twin exit SS zorst when i recently changed insurance companies & was told it didn`t effect it so defo worth informing them.

Just got to decide which to buy,…5parts? Racing Beat?..Decisions decisions. Confused
