Tyre pressures on new car far too high!

Recently purchased a brand new 2026 MX-5 convertible lasst month and drove it for a while finding the suspension was pretty bumpy to say the least. Thought it might wear in with use but just today checked the tyre pressures and guess what - they should be 29psi right - found it came from the Mazda dealer with each of the four tyres set to 39-40psi!!! - reduced to the right level and now I have a nice sports car. The car was also not very clean on pickup - PDI? - Mazda dealers get your act together.

Very poor service!!

This s not uncommon and also happened to us. Check that you have the rubber bungs in your tiedown slots. Go under the sill roughly in line with the rear of the door handles and have a look.

As said, its rather common, to save flat spots whilst the car is in transit.

I inherited an early 1990’s VW Scirocco company car which bounced up the road when I first drove it. 62 PSI all round when I checked the pressures. I think the numpty who had it before me for 6 months had seen the maximum inflation figure on the tyre wall and used that. The centre third of the tyres were bald.

Perhaps take it to a different dealer when it comes to its first service!

They call it PDI which should include tyre pressure checks. If I remember correctly all the cars I’ve had go through PDI including new cars never had correct pressures in the tyres, some wildly over inflated.

Has occurred with EVERY SINGLE car I’ve ever bought.
So much so that even if I go for a test drive, I take an ‘analogue’ tyre pressure pen with me, to reduce the obligatory 5-8 PSI over that recommend, based on the thought that overinflated tyres by a large amount might give me a negative first impression of the car/ride.

Good grief … and these numpties drive on the roads with us…

What do these holes look like?

Is this it - with no bung

That is the ones. There should be rubber bungs in them. They come in a plastic bag and should be fitted at the PDI but are often omitted.
The dealer for your car is not SG Petch, Darlington by any chance?!! Go back and ask for them FOC.

It was Johnson’s Mazda, Solihull. My bad, it was three + years ago. Should I be asking them for more than that - maybe a full underbody and cavity clean and seal?

thanks for letting me know. I checked and the rubber bungs were in place thank goodness so I’m okay.

After having any car I have owned being in a garage, especially for new tyres. The first thing I always check is tyre pressure. You’ll usually find they’re either too high or too low but never on the button.

Maybe the reason behind it, but no excuse not to reduce them accordingly when selling it, or if someone inflates them to stupid PSI when paying for a service. I’ve always thought if adjusting tyre pressures is to hard/too much hassle to do, what trust would one have in the same outfit, say, replacing a transmission or a soft top.

I actually run my tyre pressures slightly higher than the normal on all my cars, the police do it, they run slightly higher tyre pressures than standard civilian recommendations to optimise high-speed handling, reduce the risk of hydroplaning, and prevent the tyres from overheating during extreme driving conditions, so on a sports car exactly what you want

I don’t drive like pursuit coppers on the road

The dealer didn’t quibble at all. They. ordered the bungs and handed them over FOC. Given this I didn’t push any further (maybe I should have)

that’s good news. Well done at least it’s fixed now.
