Tyres for a 2007 NC 2.0 Sport

Hey All,

Apologies for another tyre thread but none of the others seem to provide a clear best tyre (I know it’s a subjective thin).

So I was wondering if you could help me ou. I have narrowed the search to 6 tyres.

I will be using them all year round but am after good dry and wet grip. This is my only car so is driven daily so track tyres are not an option but the car is driven spiritedly most of the time.

Im currently running Pirelli P Zero Nero Gt’s And I’m finding them to lack grip and they are rubbish in the wet (I don’t push the car when it’s wet either).

Anyways, My options are

  1. Michelin Pilot Sport 4
  2. Yokohama Advan V105 (Has to be a 215 for this tyre)
  3. Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2
  4. Kumho Ecsta PS71
  5. Kumho Ecsta PS91
  6. Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2
Thanks all

I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending the Kumho, I have the previous ones KU39 fitted, the replacement is PS71 I believe.

Kumho do seem popular on here I must say haha.

Do you know anything about the PS91 by any chance?

The PS71 has good reviews so is defo one I’m looking at.

Thanks

Sorry but don’t have experience of the new Kumhos but I love my KU39s. Predictable and reliable grip all the time and last well too.

You are probably struggling with going with the lower cost option. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that paying more won’t give you a better product. I had Pirellis on a previous Mk1 and they were diabolical. Swapped them for a budget tyre that suited the car far better.

If you really want to spend more money then the Uniroyal Rainsport 3 are another popular choice.

Pilot Sport 4 no question, I’ve had them on my 2.0 sport for over a year, approx 10k miles, superb in wet or dry, handled a day at Bruntingthorpe and 4 laps of the ring and still going strong.

I have the confidence to push hard in the wet, and they just hang on - If you can afford them you will not regret fitting a set.

I was in a similar dilemma a few months ago. I was torn between getting a set of Yokohama AD08R or a set of more all rounded tyre like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or Goodyear Eagle F1.

I went with the AD08R as I primarily drive in the dry. The dry grip is unbelievable. I have been out in the wet a few times and was pleasantly surprised at the grip. I know a lot of semi slicks can be nudging dangerous in the wet but these seemed fine. Not noticed any higher fuel consumption or noise.

Only done about 2k miles so far and they seem to be holding up great.

I don’ think you’ll go far wrong with any of the ones you have suggested though.

I run Avon zv7s I also run Michelin on the same car (different wheels)

i wouldn’t hesitate in running either of them on the 5

i must admit only buying the Avon’s as money was a bit tight when I purchased them but all in all a good tyre

100% hands down the Pilot Sport 4’s

I had the KU39’s and was very happy with them, I’ve just swopped all 4 for the PS4’s and they are in a different league

I don’t know about the other Kumho you mention, hopefully NickD will contribute to this thread and give his always valued opinion, he fitted my tyres.

for ZV7s. Plenty of bite in the dry and a surprising amount of grip in the damp at a Castle Combe track day. Plenty of tread after 15,000 miles and not bad for noise; great value.

I don’t quite understand what you mean here. Im more than happy to go for the lower cost option.

Im leaning towards either the Yokohama’s or the Kumhos currently.

Not to worry. I’ve seen him around so maybe he will arrive here. Definitely attracted by the PS71’s though.

I’ve driven on these tyres and they seem reasonably ok. Decent dry grip and not bad in the wet either, thanks for the suggestion

The PS4 does seem like one damn good tyre. Where did you get them from if you don’t mind me asking?

Opinions with be as varied as the number of replies.

Pick any of the mentioned tyres and I doubt you will be disappointed. You won’t get a PS91 though as they are not made in your size.

Very much depends on how much you want to pay. I would fit a set of PS71 for about £280 and they will perform totally adequately on the car all year round. I doubt 95% of drivers would know any difference between these and the £250 more you would need to spend for a set of Pilot Sport 4.

I had four PS71’s fitted a couple of months back cost £278. They work just fine, grip the road around bends so I don’t end up in a ditch and there is not a great deal of road noise.

Everyone’s got their own preference for sure.

Ah well that’s a positive sign then.

Im not concerned about cost tbh. Just want the best tyre that can be used on the road all year with great girp.

The PS71’s seem like the best choice so far.

They don’t sound like anything special here, is that correct?

Define “Special”?

The difference between poor tyres and decent ones is generally pretty noticeable. The difference between decent and “best” the margines become very small.

And you very much have to define what â€śbest” means.

If you have something like Barum on your car, you will find that changing to any of the above tyres will suddenly give you grip in the wet that you never knew existed. If you want to start deciding which tyre allows you to go round a particular roundabout 2mph quicker than another one then you are in to a rather specialised definition of “best.”

If you are hoping that the “best” tyres will transform your car into something better than it is, it won’t happen. Working just fine seems about the right desired goal.
