had the Maz now for 6 odd months, and its been effin SHIT on petrol! lol, but i love it still… so… changed the 02 sensor, no diff, its running rich too… so… its pointing to the NTC2 (water Temp) where can i get one from? i tryed FMP, and they had 2 in for me, one for the MX5 and one for a “eunos” or wot he thought was… both wrong!
so where can i get one, im pretty sure its that causing poo petrol !
The early 1.6 models have 3 sensors related to the cooling system
On top of the thermostat is a thermoswitch, used to turn on the cooling fan when the coolant temp is high enough.
A sensor with a single wire, on the rear of the engine, exhaust side, this is used for the temp gauge.
a 2 wire sensor on the rear of the engine, inlet side, this is used by the ECU to control the fuelling variations due to coolant temp, i.e more fuel when the engine is cold.
Later models have only two sensor, with the ECU controlling the coolant fan (no switch on top of t’stat)
A rather late contribution here; the water thermister shares a common earth (on the 1.6 at least) with the throttle position sensor. The earthing point bizarrely is behind the dashboard, above the ECU. A fault in the earth will throw out a code 9. Replacing the sensor will still leave a code 9, and much head scratching. In the end, I simply earthed the water sensor, and the TPS to the engine block. Code went away, so did a stuttering issue I had. Diagnosis by Roadster Robbie, who had access to the original factory wiring diagrams. The only way to get to the original earth point was to strip the dashboard out.
If it comes on initially then turns off and remains off then there are no codes stored. You could induce fault code by unplugging the air flow meter and checking codes are stored just to satisfy yourself that everything is working.
