Wednesday 13th July David's Mid Week Run - Fossils & Flowers

Meet 9.30am Taverham Garden Centre, on left after entrance. Depart 9.40am for East Runton beach car park, NR27 9PA with coffee stop en route. Car park charge (1hr for £1.50). Low tide 11am to 4pm.

Fossil hunting on the beach with your own guide & mentor (that’s me). Those less motivated by fossils can sun bathe. We may be lucky and find Echinoids, which today we would recognise as Sea Urchins, more realistically I think we can expect to find sections of Belemnintes (species alive 201 - 66 million years ago). Now they say there are no guarantees in life but here is mine – everyone will go home with a piece of a fossil Belemnite, now that’s confidence for you, or I’ll eat my Norfolk Fives hat! (NB. Small print T&C apply). Best of luck finding a shark’s tooth – but you never know.

Part two of the day takes place at Sheringham’s Priory Maze, Garden & café. Here we can enjoy the flora, puzzle over the maze and grab some lunch. Garden & maze £6.50, seniors £6.00.
Finally a mazey hour’s drive towards Norwich (ends on A47 Norwich Southern bypass at Easton) with folk peeling off along the way for home.
Don’t be a stay at home fossil sign up for this run.

Help with the route which I originally put in a reply but am including here.
Those missing us at Taverham can join us for coffee at Alby Crafts cafe NR11 7QE.
Note late change to route, still stopping at Alby Art Cafe, due to road closure. From Taverham Garden centre/Saltstore route as follows (Google maps):

That sounds very good David, thank you. It will be a relief to get back into the MX-5 after a week’s enforced absence from all things Mazda.
Best wishes,
Laurie

Hi David,

Would love to be included. As well as fossils will also be keeping my eyes peeled for chunks of amber which I’m told are highly prized by jewellers these days.

Richard W.

Richard.
Welcome aboard. Good luck with the amber searching. get a piece with a mosquito trapped inside and you can start a Dino park, bet nobody has thought of that one.
David

David,
That sounds lovely. I look forward to a F&F day (Fossils and Flowers) nothing to do with a Tesco clothing line.
Thanks.
Mark

Who wouldn’t look forward as you put it to a F&F day. Maybe I should have called it … wait for it … Fossils and Fives. Mark 1 cars would get a right of passage but not your Mk4.
You’re on the list.
David

Hi David sounds good can you put me and Gella down for this one thanks Mick.

We’ll make Paleontologists of you yet. Putting you on the list.
David

Laurie,
I thought you were in Northumberland, seems you are joining us for the ‘Fossils and Flowers’ run which is great. I’ll add your name to the list.
David

Thanks David. We arrived this afternoon and will be returning on the 9th, so Wednesday week will be ideal to shake the cobwebs out of both myself and the car. There was some stunning scenery heading north on the A68 after leaving the A1. It’s just a pity we were using the conventional car rather than the cinemascope vision of the NB with the top down.

Rona and Phil,
Wow you were quick getting this message on the website, we only spoke about an hour or two before. See you at Taverham next Wednesday.

Ok thanks.

Hi Dave. Would like to join your run tomorrow if possible but would like to meet you at alby crafts if you can give me a time please if his is o k. As we live in Yarmouth it’s easier to meet there than try to get to taverham through Norwich early in the morning.
Oddjob dave and gwyn

Dave,
We should be at Alby Crafts Cafe 10.15 tomorrow morning. Postcode is in my Topic’s first posting along with our route.

David

Hi Dave. Unfortunately I have had problems overnight so won’t be able to attend todays run Can you let me know if you get this message as I don’t want to delay your run waiting for us to arrive at alby in the absence of a reply by 10.00 I will phone Chris to see if he has your mobile no and then alby crafts to pass a message on
Sorrry for the problems caused. Dave

Thanks for a smashing day out David. With my pocket full of those prehistoric Bellends as mementos I’ll never forget it.
Richard.

Thanks David for another brilliant run and for getting us all hooked on collecting fossils.
I thought I’d slope off early from Sheringham Priory as I’d been there before fairly recently and it also gave me a chance to try AmiGo as an alternative to Google Maps for the homeward run.
