I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:
I’ve watched too many youtube clips and I want to install a dashcam on my NC2, I’m curious to see which ones people have. I’ve seen Viofo recommended a lot by youtubers, but I take anything they say with a grain of salt.
Also, has anyone installed a rear facing one? I’m wondering if I might be able to install one on the wind deflector.
The front camera sits behind the rear view mirror so isn’t visible from the driver’s seat.
To mount the rear camera to the wind deflector, I purchased some sourcing map blank metal cards from Amazon, into which I drilled four holes and secured it with a small nut and bolt at each corner. The camera itself is then fixed to the card with 3M double-sided adhesive tape.
522 has a polariser on the forward camera so you can remove all the reflections off the dash. It has never given any problems, always worked.
But the Nextbase sticky-pads are pretty well useless! Hot sun for a few months and they turn to toffee. These replacement 3M 9448A sticky pads last so much better, but need a bit of simple trimming to fit neatly.
Nextbase 512GW on the NC3.75 25AE.
It also has the polariser, and moved on from my dear old NC1 Niseko. But it’s too old to find the correct rear camera for it at a reasonable price, cheaper to buy another 522. This below link includes the link to my slightly different NC1 installation for further info.
Time is the big question! How long is a piece of string?
It always depends on how much you want to do, then how much you know about it, ease of access to all the relevant bits (arthritic?), and finally not hitting any hidden nasty surprises!
Often it is well worth paying a trusted professional!
However, if you have mechanical sympathy for the car and its tender bits and pieces, and you are nimble, AND you’ve studied the relevant manuals for the road-map to plan your journey through the task, then go ahead. That’s what I did.
Outside on the drive allows doors to be wide open, so much easier for access, but it rains, and in some locations one needs to stay alert for possible light-fingered passers-by .
In the garage it can be cramped and awkward (eg I have to move the car depending which side I’m working on), and I’m much less nimble than I used to be, but it’s also dry, and warm, and secure, and power and tools are close to hand.
Second time around on any task is usually much quicker. This is where the professionals score having done multiple installs.
Kawa Mini 3. Ive got three of these now in various vehicles. The 2k resolution is more than enough for clear number plate shots however the main reason I chose it is because of its size. Its very small and discreet and hides behind the mirror perfectly so its not in your field of vision. The phone app that connects to it is also really easy to use and down load videos etc. The voice control, is good if you want to take a picture although it will do it automatically because of the G sensor. You can pick these up for about £30-40 on eBay
