Had some headlight issues recently, so sorted out a dodgy earth at headlight plug. Of course, couldn’t initially get one of the screws out so just took the lid off to access. Once fixed i returned to the offending screw, cut a slit in it and used a flat blade screwdriver to remove. All screws lubricated and refitted to make any future access simpler.
Had a new driveshaft oil seal fitted in the diff. Only a very minor leak but with no way of checking the level without getting under the car, better safe than sorry.
Nice day last Sunday, so my wife and I put the lid down for the short trip to visit some relations in Witham Friary (they live on a farm), and got forced into a ditch on a hairpin bend (locals will know it well, I’m sure !), by a prat in a Skoda - going too fast (!) and cutting the bend.
Luckily there was no actual damage, but I’ve never seen a car so bloody muddy - on one side only !
So, as I said, had to wash the 5 today - first decent day to actually get it done.
Today, I have mainly been crawling around in the back of the MX, fitting a GC Fabriccations roll bar in preparation for its first track day at Snetterton next Monday.
The roll bar is in, all I have to do now is put back all the plastic sections I removed to get the roll bar in. It will be more like a jigsaw puzzle In 3 dimensions, oh joy!
Finally the combination of some free time and dry weather this week to catch up on outstanding jobs.
First up was to sort out the aluminium ‘corrosion’ on the underside of the boot lid. Removed the flaking paint and oxidation then rubbed down with wet & dry abrasive paper.
Sprayed with several coats of etch primer…
…then body colour and lacquer to complete the repair.
In between the various stages of boot repair, I installed an additional USB socket in the centre storage box that I fitted some time ago (from MX-5 Parts, replaced original cup holders). I had already replaced the extra 12V power socket supplied with the box with a dual USB power outlet - handy for powering/recharging my GoPro’s The additional USB is to connect to the Android Auto/Apple Car Play dongle of my Atoto head unit. The dongle itself was also installed under the front section of the centre console so that no connection wiring is visible inside the car.
The phone plugs into the new USB socket and sits inside the storage box. I have ordered a much shorter USB C cable to replace the long one shown here.
Smooth jazz radio from Florida and weather from North West England!
On the agenda for tomorrow (weather permitting) is fitting reversing camera, LED combined fog/DRL’s and Nightbreaker dipped beam bulbs.
update to my previous post about taking delivery of my new bonnet lifters. i fitted them the other day, GREAT! however when closing my bonnet i forgot to move my rubber mallet from the plastic tray below the windscreen and i have bent/twisted the bonnet. its going in on Saturday morning to get straightened. Sad times
Washed & polished, touched in the worst of the latest stone chips on the front bumper, cleaned the interior & applied silicone lubricant to the roof seals.
Full clay bar clean after a good snow foam wash then loads of Naviwax, Snap Seal and an alleged Jap Polish which mimics ceramic coating…but probably not. Now have to fill myself with painkillers to ease my aching arms/hands/knees etc !!
