what to do with £10k

Its not strickly a problem but i didn’t know where to post this.

At the moment it is possible i have about 10k free for a new sports car (2nd hand), unless it was a nicer one or new mx5 i could spend about 15k, but i am just looking at the possibility of getting another mx-5 Mk1 and spend the remaining well around 7-8k on making it super dooper nice, this is for my mum… she loves the mazda mx-5 and had an mk1 for 12years! ( shes not really old either, capable of having fun in a car still!)

I just want to see the possibilites of around 10k on an mk1 (she wants the pop up head lights!) and doing it up if you like (not boy racer though!!) it is only for the road and wont be used on a track but i want it to feel very luxury and nice response (1.8).

i didn’t really know where to start myself, i love my mk1, its pretty standard and ive fiddled with lots of things on it but never the engin or much else.

so wondering what your thoughts are and what kind of money would be needed (maybe less) to make it nicer if you like, just putting it out there…

oh and rougly what components would be best at looking to be the priority to improve, i was thinking some better brake discs and pads, maybe new suspension, possibly a diffrent exaust system just to make it sound ever so slightly more agressive (not boy racer blow ur ears off sound), maybe the front spoiler upgraded to that other one mazda offer, well mx5 parts has, just to round off the front, possibly run flat tyers with some nicer alloys (no chrome), get the seats recovered in leather and little asthetic things like that, but i supose i want to ask you guys more about the mechanics that would be best to improve.

Thanks, Dave (sorry if the post is a bit of a mess, just thought it makes you see my POV  a bit better, also this is just, well testing the water if you like, just seeing what you guys would say is wise to upgrade mainly and a rough cost, if i do go ahead ill start to list stuff and do more research)

I can’t believe I’m going to say this (Mk1 owner) but if you have that kind of money you can get a very nice Mk3. No it won’t have pop-ups but (and I hate to say this) it is a far more civilised ride, still loads of choice of suspension upgrades etc if that’s your thing but, regardless of how old your Mum is, it’ll give years of trouble free motoring, whilst still being good fun, without the maintenance that is required with an older car.

I don’t wish to sound rude but how technically minded are you? You say you “don’t really know where to start myself” well thats all well and good if you can afford the time to figure out problems as they arise as your working on the car (it took me nearly 2 weeks of afternoons to strip, replace, de-rust and waxoil then reassemble the back end of my car).

I’ve just put 10k into autotrader and there is an endless choice of very good cars for that money.

That said if your that keen you can have my Mk1 for 10k!!! All the works done, it just needs driving…

For £10,000 you can buy an immaculate limited edition Mk1 with leather seats as standard. Put £6000 into an ISA for a rainy day & still have change to upgrade / modify your car if it needs anything.

The best MX-5 i have ever seen for sale was only up for £6000. The famous Blackbullit below

Good luck with the search [Y]

hmm in hindsight this was a silly post, it was a sudden thought, im technically minded enough…i think, but lack much experience as im younge and most of my experience is with off road motor bikes, stripping them down, changin parts maintaining ect. i feel silly for not noticing the most obvious option of looking for a done up 5, although most people wouldent bother selling a done up 5 (due to the depreciation on everything put into it) would they? but its certainly something im going to have a look into, again sorry i feel a little silly now :stuck_out_tongue:

and wow the “Blackbullet” is a total beauty! :open_mouth:

thanks, dave

Mate don’t feel silly, think of a forum as a chat with your mates after 5 pints…it all makes perfect sense at the time!!!

It does make me wonder where I went wrong if your young and can afford to splash 15k on your Mum, I’m considerably older and can’t do that!!!

Then again if that moneys burning a hole in your pocket I’m your man who can relieve you…maybe I should reword that!!!

ha that is very true, was just thinking of the possibilities of actually investing
decent cash into an mk1 but the practicalities are not so good, i love projects
but i think this idea will have to be left for another time and on my own mk1
instead, just had a chat with my brother and he’s
decided to put some money into the pot and were looking at maybe a second hand Porsche
or something, never the less, the idea of working on my mk1 and seeing an
outcome anywhere near as beautiful as the “blackbullet” does excite
me.

Thanks for the response guys,

Dave

For less than your 10k I got a mk1 MX5 turbo with coil-overs, roll-cage, carbon body panels, big brakes, hard top, race seats, harnesses, respray, stickers, loads of sets of wheels, a Lotus Elise and a motorcycle.

It’s way more fun having three toys rather than just one.

Result!

What m/cycle is it?, and do you ride it?

Me - a spare £10k would prob go on a 350Z… haven’t driven one yet, but it’s a lot of car/£.

TELL YA WHAT WE CAN DO,

we buy ya mum a nice mx for about three grand, then i take ya mum to the bahamas for a months holiday, with the remaing amount,   [;)]

P/S  that includes me wife as well mate,   i will say that   its good of you to want to do this for ya mum, but thats what mums are for = my mums 86 =, so an mx is out of the question  [:D]  regards  leemarb

ZX7R and it used to be my daily commuter, until I moved so close to work that I can drive there in less time than it takes to struggle in to leathers and undo all the security on the bike. It’s partially because of freezing on the bike that it took me three years of owning my MX5 before I realised the heater wasn’t connected. I’ve fixed it just in time for summer…

[/offtopic]

If it was mine I would invest it in the bank ,and see if I could turn it into £10,005.00 by this time next year!!!

Hey! - anything like this:-

Had lots of fun on that, until i sold it a year or so ago - in the sunny weather the 5 got chosen (with top off), and in the rain the 5 got chosen (with the top up).
Bike got used less & less - and like you said, when the weather was good enough it was a sweltering pain.

Plus, it went too quick! - 135 mph chasing Audis & BMWs down the M69 was a daily event!

You may have a struggle on your hands there

Nothing like that at all. Mine is green [:D]

Oh - a proper Kawasaki then…! [;)]

Had it tuned by Rhencullen, and they adjusted stance - dropped front by 5mm, and raised rear by 20 (I think it was?) - turn improved greatly, and rock steady through bend.
Had sticky Dunlops, and K&N too. Loved it - especially at 10,000+rpm (rpms? lol).

Argh! My eyes!

We must stop poluting this thread. On the old forum this would have been deleted already.

Could I adopt you please [:D]

hehe, that gave me a good chuckle.
