What's a reasonable price/time for a 54,000 miles service?

Hi there,

My Merlot’s done 57,000 so I reckon it’s time for a major service: cambelt change, differential oil change, manual transmission oil change, fuel filter change, air filter change, etc. In short, the works.

A local independant garage has estimated 6 hours’ labour @ £35/hour + VAT, which comes to around £250 + parts; does this sound about right?

Thanks,

Spinner

As an example - Sam Goodwin - http://www.samgoodwin.com/ - full service with cam-belt - £249+VAT, VVT engine £269+VAT

Sam Goodwin is a reputable MX5 dealer that offers servicing too, many on here (or the old forum) have said good things about them.

I paid £229 for full 58k service with cambelt change at SuperCar Classics in Chester.

Your quote does sound a little higher once you add the parts on.

If you can I would always go with a recommended garage like Goof says above.

Best of luck

Hi, mine’s just done 53,000 miles and the last service was at a backstreet garage so I’m going for a full service a little bit early. I’ve been quoted roughly £160 labour for a change of all fluids, cambelt and waterpump change. It may end up being slightly more as there’s a few other bits I’m getting done.

Here’s a list of what’s been ordered:

From mx5parts:

—   -------------- ------------------------------

1 x 48353          POWER STEERING BELT- NO AIR CON

 1 x ADM57513       CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT,ALL MX5

 1 x SI352          ALTERNATOR BELT 94>

 1 x SI469          PUMP, WATER, 1.8. OEM

 1 x SI474          OIL FILTER. OEM

And from Opie Oils:

Mobil Synt S 5W-40  4L (Engine)    22.97
Fuchs TITAN GEAR SYN 75W-90  2L  (Gearbox)    9.90
Silkolene BOA 90 LS  1L  (Diff)    6.14

And also 4 x NGK BKR6E11 from Ebay (7.92 for 4, delivered)

I haven’t got brake fluid, clutch fluid or coolant yet, but with those parts work out around £220, so with the £160 labour it’s looking llike around £380.

It may not be that much cheaper than a dealer but I get all the extra bits done lilke waterpump & oil seals, I also know the mechanic and know that he’s worked on MX5s and likes them.

You need two cambelt seals.

And I know it’s too late, but out of curiousity, why didn’t you buy a cambelt kit with all the bits as a package?

Your total package cost of parts and labour is a really sweet deal, though.

Cam seals - D’oh! Why didn’t I realise that?  I still haven’t got around to booking it in though so there’s still time…

I did buy the cam belt kit but it came through on the invoice as seperate parts (I copied & pasted from the email invoice).
