Hi,
just bought myself a Mk1 Eunos roadster that needs a new hood (one of the reasons it was very cheap…)
I’m based in Nottingham so I was wondering if there is a place I can buy and get one fitted that won’t break the bank. I’ve enquired at car hood warehouse and they’ve quoted £450 vinyl roof fitted with heated glass rear screen, which doesn’t seem too bad. Only problem is they are based in South London.
I don’t mind making a trip, but if there is a good place nearer, I’d probably prefer that…
We got a lovely Mohair hood from eBay (of all places) and then fitted it ourselves. The seller gave brilliant detailed instructions with photos of what you do at each step so it wasn’t too bad, although a bit fiddly in places as expected! It took us about 5 hours to do in all. The whole thing only cost £190 plus postage, and the car looks so smart now!
Don’t know the distances, but have a look at Mazmania and give Peter Jones a ring on 07812152250. He is area coordinator for Cheshire and North Wales and is renowned for his hoods and he fits while you wait. He advertises in STHT.
I rang up Jack smith and was indeed quoted £270 for a mohair hood with plastic rear window. Sounds fine to me. If I can find a second hand glass rear window that would be a bonus, as that can be put in if supplied, but otherwise I can manage without it!
well, I’ve taken all the advice on board, and have booked into Jack Smiths for next Saturday - I’ve also got a glass window for him to sew in - really looking forward to it now, as the old hood has gotten worse in the freezing cold weather… very brittle now!
Now, once the hood is sorted, I’ll need to get the electrics for the rear screen wired up. How hard is this and what do I need?
Just a precaution, but when you get it fitted take a large bottle of water with you and check that the rain rails etc work ok before driving home. Not sure where you are, but for myself when I got my hood fitted it was a VERY LONG way to drive back and get it replaced.
Don’t panic or anything, mine isn’t a ‘horror story’, but I wish I had of just double-checked first time round. [;)]
Well, I’ve just got back from Jack Smiths and must say I’m a very happy bunny. Raymond fitted my new mohair top quickly and efficiently while all the time engaging me in a great bit of chat mainly about rugby! Very nice guy and it was fascinating watching him put the roof together, making it look deceptively easy. I reckon if I had tried it would have been a complete hash up. The glass screen was stiched in nicely and everything fits together very well. He also showed me how to adjust the window seals should it ever begin to leak (it definitely doesn’t at the moment).
All, in all, I can’t recommend him highly enough - and a cost of £260 fitted.
Did Raymond look full of busy stitching my replacement glass screen into the rear section I posted to him? I can’t imagine he had much time to do a quality job on your roof if he was concentrating on my job
Ace bloke is Raymond. He’s replacing the rear screen on my hood (supplied by him) with a glass screen (supplied by me) after the plastic one he supplied cracked in the cold weather last week.
I still have not made the journey to Swansea for my new hood. We have just returned from Holiday and I will be looking to get the hood done over the next few weeks.
