I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Which catalytic convertor to buy and fit.
Just recently pass MOT with a heavy dose of catclean and multiple retests to get it passed. The cat has done it’s job for 30 years but I need to replace it for future MOTs. Unsure which to get.
MX-5 parts cat has poor reviews saying they only last 2/3 years, if that. I’ve found one on ebay made by BM Catalysts, wanted to check if it’ll be viable. Any suggestions would be of a great help, thank you.
I have a Klarius branded one sat in my garage I bought second hand a while ago but was assured it was ok. Your welcome to it foc if you cover the postage, will have to check the length on it though but it was bought for an early MK1.
If yours is an import you may not need it for the Mot, the emissions test is different but not many know this including Mot testers.
Trying to explain that to an Mot tester is hard work though, i had to walk away from one a few years ago as they would not listen. You can get an email from dvsa to confirm it if it helps to take with you. Im a bit unsure if the emissions computer automatically populates stuff or if you manually input it.
Thank you, I’m lost after reading this thread about if I even need the cat now. So many search results adamantly state you need one, import or not, and disregarding pre 1995 as well. I’ll get back to you about the Krasius cat, I appreciate the offer. Thanks again.
I’m not sure, it definitely went through the cat test though. I spent a while ensuring everything else would be fixed/passable and I fail on this, would be more painful if the retests didn’t get me over the line. I’ve seen mixed results about if it’s necessary to have the cat. It’s a 1992 (unsure on the month, I’ll try and track that down) and imported in 2002, is that relevant or is decat the way to go? Thank you.
I definitely will for next MOT, do you have experience with alot of push back from the MOT testers/garages? I’m sure I’ll have to debate with them about it
My other two seater was built by myself and had to go through the SVA test and an MOT before it could be registered. DVLA then issued a V5C which has the required emissions limits printed on it, based on the date of the original donor car. I take it along with me to the MOT station so there can be no dispute on what limits it has to comply with.
I had this problem last year and a fail for emissions, test centre said it was registered as an MX-5 not a Eunos, I contacted the DVLA, the guy who answered the phone was really helpful and had come across the problem before and updated their system while I was on the phone, subsequently went back to test centre and it passed the “two Gas test”. The test centre can only go by what the DVLA info says.
Have to say one up for the DVLA this time, can’t always say that!!
I would also do a thorough check on the engine for leaking vacuum hoses or service items like plugs and airfilter. A well running car should by default be running pretty clean whether cat or non cat.
