The issue seems to be that your content editor is not working - I’ve checked your profile, and it should be fine.
What browser are you using?
I’ve had the same thing too, in Chrome or Opera. IE8 works, but lots of people avoid IE like the plague because it’s the one most targeted by hackers.
Entering html code just do to carriage returns is a pain
LondonLuke, you can force paragraphs into your text by entering the text < B R > (but without any of the spaces inside the chevrons). Put two together and you get a blank line
This is a test in Chrome, I’ve set my Site Option > Content Editor option to ‘Enhanced’ and come back in from the top…
So this should be a line, after a blank line.
And this should be a line after two blank lines.
This is a test in Firefox 3.0.4,
This should be a line, after a blank line.
This is a test in Opera 10 (beta)
This should be a line, after a blank line.
And this should be a line after two blank lines.
Enhanced editor doesn’t work in this either
This is a test in IE8.
This should be a line, after a blank line.
And this should be a line after two blank lines.
Yup, the Enhanced Editor works here too. I’m going to turn it off, then add to this post and see if it still formats correctly.
This is a test in IE8 with the Standard Editor.
Here’s a line after a blank line,
And here’s another after two blank lines.
So… it’s not whether you’ve got Standard or Enhanced, it’s presumably down to how the browser handles the Editor setting
I think the ones that aren’t playing ball are doing so because they fall back to the ‘Plain Text’ option. There’s no formatting toolbar being displayed.
The formatting even here in IE8 is a bit screwy though. One carriage return inserts a blank line I wouldn’t expect to see.
Ah, you have to press [Shift]-[Enter] to get a new line, rather than a new paragraph (which automatically inserts a blank line for you). You can see it in HTML view - Shift-Enter gives < b r > wheres as Enter gives < p >
I’ll save you a bit of time, and tell you that it does not work in Safari either [:(]
The newer version, which I hope we are able to update to shortly works in Safari and Chrome, and I would have thought Opera, but no promises.
It is simply a case that the content editor is not supported by these browsers, which I know is very annoying, especially if you are a mac user.
But it seems to work in the post you have just made !
I use IE, I meant that the poor guys with macs are forced to download firefox
Hey, don’t blame Safari just because the forum software is pants! If a piece of software is so badly-written that any forum which uses it is rendered incompatible with the third most popular web browser, that’s hardly the fault of the browser, is it?!
But I don’t really care, coz I use Firefox through choice anyway [;)]. Here’s hoping the imminent upgrade fixes a whole lot more than the text editor …
Perhaps I was not clear, so I shall re-phrase my comment
The people who use macs are in the unforunate situation where the default browser is incompatible with the content editor (Note-Safari is not incompatible with the “forum software”, just the content editor, which is open-source (herein lies the problem) and is used on a lot of websites, whether for forums, comments, blogs, feedback…), and due to the inherant shortcomings of the content editor, are forced to seek a third party browser if they want the full experience.
I’m not denying that there is a problem with the content editor, or that it is perfect, it is certainly not, hence why we are wanting to update it, but you need to understand that things don’t happen instantly. This is not a personal website, where if things go wrong it is no big deal. People sponsor the forum, and as you have pointed out so many times, it is a fundamental part of the club. If we rush in to an update without evaluating our options, testing it, we could end up with a situation where there are flaws and vulnerabilites that result in the databases being hacked, personal details being leeked and sold, or just general errors, which as far as I am concerned, there are too many of already (one is too many).
Hopefully when the next load of updates get rolled out, that will sort a lot of our problems, but I can safely say that it will not be the end.
just the content editor, which is open-source (herein lies the problem)
Why? Just curious.
I cut this down from a 500 word essay of an answer, but basically…
The lack of money/resources means that a lot of open source stuff does not get the sort of testing, or even development that it might need due to a lot of people being volunteers (and having full time jobs), or just generally the costs involved, but the beauty of open source is that somebody else can do the work if they need to.
The content editor used here (tinyMCE) is a good editor, especially in its latest form, but what we have now is a couple of years out of date and simply doesn’t reflect the current browser useage demographic. When released, they could have got away with the lack of support, hence why it was not developed, but today they cannot, hence why it is!
I’ll remind everybody at this point that this is an MX5 forum - a lot of people will no doubt disagree with what I have said, but this is not the place to have a debate/arguement about it - there are plenty of other forums out there [:)]
