I’ve had my 1993 Eunos Mk1 1.6 (115bhp, 101,000 miles) since July now. Three fill ups since then, giving me 27, 30 and 25 mpg(UK) with 230 miles being the most miles I’ve got out of a tank. I obviously haven’t got the hang of this granny driving thing yet.
My 2002 1.6 is doing 38mpg on mixed rural/urban. I do have a gentle right foot and only had car 4 weeks so still trying it out.
IanHP - Sorry to disillusion you, but the American site is Miata.net, We do have the odd American subscriber (and welcome them) but this site is about as English as it gets, whether it’s London, Bradford or Glasgow! Note the site address = mx5oc.co.uk
Was that a “Wish I was there” moment?
Sorry if I confused you Gerryn. The American site I was referring to was fuelly.com. If one looks up the fuel consumption for MX5 Miattas the average shown is 27/28 mpg. As this is for a US gallon it equates to about 32 mpg to us UK owners. I am well aware that this Club site I am posting on is in the UK.
The fuel consumption of an MX5/Eunos differs massively when driving styles are taken into account.
I also have a ratty old VW Golf Diesel (bear with me…). No matter how hard I drive it, it always averages a little over 50mpg. However, if I drive any MX5 hard, its easy to drop the mpg figures into the low 20’s while a long steady motorway journey will usually result in 40+mpg. Thats not just based on an individual car - I’ve had at least 1000+ Eunos/MX5s through my hands over the years.
The ‘problem’ is that its just irresistible to rev an MX5 hard - great fun but never good for fuel consumption. I’ve noticed that ‘Type II’ Mk1s are worse, thanks to the shorter diff ratios but by far and away the thirstiest was a 1.6 turbo: 200bhp but driven hard would slip down to 12/15mpg.

Any owners of 1.6 mk2 like to inform me what to expect from my car? Had it 6 weeks now and once managed 200 miles to half tank, now only getting 150 …equates out to 30 mpg now…I was hoping for closer to 40+
Any thoughts?
Pete

I think the post from sbloxxy really sums it all up. When i FIRST HAD MY CAR I drove it around with kid gloves on, slowly relaxed, savouring the hood down in the sun, chilled out. Now with hood up and having got used to it, having fitted a k&n intake , i love the sound of putting my foot down, that roar, having fun on the roads in north wales and yes increasing my mpg. I have learnt to balance these pleasures with cruising at 60 on the A55 on way to work. and regardless of which fuel I put in I get 150 miles to a half tank of fuel. I havent even worked out mpg, as the pleasure overrides mpg now [ within reason].
I thank you all for your answers and thoughts,
Driving is now fantastic fun, the only side I now have to learn to live with is neighbours and “some” friends do the scissors sign to me as I drive past…but thats their ignorance and stupid car reviews making claims for point scoring reasons.
Long live my MX5 and the fun I HAVE IN IT…
Pete.
