1.6 sport or 1.8 Jasper Conran.

Hi All,

I’m going to look at 2 cars this Saturday!!!

Firstly a 1.6 Sport 2001 (51) 2 owners 59k miles and secondly a 1.8 Jasper Conran (black one) also 2001 (y) also 2 owners 60k miles, and would like any tips or any information on what to look for or any recommendations on which of the 2 to choose!

I drive 350 mile a week mostly motorway so was thinking the Sport would be good as its got the 6 speed gearbox but the conran’s got the 1.8 litre engine so that may be better!!!

Both cars are at same dealer and just under £5K each (is this about right price wise?) I know the Conrans been in the showroom for about 4 months so am deffinately up for a bit of haggling if thats the one to go for!

Thanks again in advance for your coments and advice.[maz][H]

Is this a trick question? ;o) For me it’s a no brainer - the 1.8 in Mk2 is the better choice and the Conran will hold its value better. Price is way too high for a 1.6 if you ask me, but about usual for good condition Conrans. I don’t think a 6-speed will be an advantage for motorway, the 6th gear is similar ratio to 5th gear in 5-speed, there are just shorter shifts for sportier acceleration to higher revs before changing. I would have though that better suited to twisties than long straight lines.

Is this a typo???

Sport was a 1.8 with a 6-speed

Jasper Conran - a very nice Ltd Ed, and my favourite. Especially when it’s 100% complete & original.

Rang garage to confirm and sport is listed incorrectly it is a 1.8 not a 1.6 with 6 speed gearbox.

Really like the look of the Jasper Conran but didn’t know if 6 six speed box would be more advantageous!

Also did think the Conran would have better resale value.

Just really wanted to gauge other members opinions!

Did think about trying for a 10th anniversary model, but cant source one locally!

Thanks anyway for the comments.

Mike.

Sit in them both. I cannot drive a Mk2.5 as the seat is about 1" higher than the MK2

1.8 Sport over a Jasper Conran all day long! I’m not a fan of the JC. It is a UK special edition and in my opinion some of the trim leaves a little to be desired. The platinum ones are silver cars re-sprayed (you can see the masking line round the door shuts). The black ones are less “messed with”.

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

Had a nice long test drive and found the Jasper Conran to be the better drive, Ride was a bit smoother and gearbox a lot better at selecting.

Sport was a nice car but i couldn’t take to the silver colour, it had an outward dent in boot lid too & i noticed a bit of overspray on rear bumper.

Gave cars a good look over for about 45 minutes and only thing i found on JC was door trim loose & needs new rear brake pads which garage agreed will do [Y] along with 12 months mot & 6 months tax.[:)]

Think RAC inspection would be a good idea[I]

If all goes well my mk1 will be up for sale soon [::(][::(][::(] so keep an eye open in for sale section [au] as will list it here before anywhere else.
