Hi, getting my car serviced later this month and considering oil.
Until now the car has been always been serviced annually at around 5k intervals at Mazda using 10w40 s/s Castrol GTX or Magnatec, after a flush.
I’m getting my local independent to do the service and have got an OE filter. He carries VAG Quantum Synta 10w/40 in bulk.
Car now does about 3k a year and is not in daily use so think this is fine or should I buy in some Shell Helix or Magnatec at extra cost.
Thoughts please.
Thanks
I’ve had the car serviced using Fuchs Titan XTR 10w40 SS. The specialist I use for servicing is also using this for 12 MX5’s he’s preparing for a race series. The car felt pretty good on a recent trackday so I would certainly recommend it. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-990-fuchs-titan-xtr-10w-40-high-performance-semi-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx
Cheers!
VAG (volkswagon/audi group) Quantum Synta is a very good oil and there is no advantage in buying in a more expensive brand. Regards, Kev.
You cannot go wrong with magnatec,it’s all i ever use for these babies, mine and others owners Mx/roadsters
The Range may sell an oil that Fuchs made and put in a tub, but it’s not their own oil rebranded. Loads of companies do it, like Castrol make Comma and Carlube oils and apparantly Fuchs make Unipart too. The budget companies approach the larger oil companies to make an oil for a lower price, they submit bids to make it and the winner makes a reduced price and quality oil. Rather than just the larger company making a profit out of the oil, they have to make a profit as well as the budget company and still make a cheap oil, so the quality of the ingredients are pretty low. Also they don’t want to sell something as good as their own oil for a reduced price.
Quantum 10w-40 is a pretty basic option, own brand oils are like the budget ones I mentioned, other than they have been designed to meet the manufacturer specifications.
If you want a 10w-40, the Fuchs XTR is reduced to £17.09 at the moment

Thanks for the replies all.
I’ve used s/s Quantum oil before - in a Mercedes I owned about 10 years back, so know they are good and meet VAG specs. However have decided to buy some Shell Helix HX7 for the Mazda as it’s on a good deal from Smith & Allan at the moment.
The shell will be just fine
