16inch tyre

Can anyone please tell me if I can fit a 16 inch wheel in the boot of my mx5 mk3 even if I deflate tyre slightly. I stupidly bought one thinking it was a space saver

I have a Mk3 space saver wheel brand new if you want one, collection Sheffield

Sadly certainly does not work with my NBFL, as an NC owner you might find this interesting ;- Wheel to fit in boot - #8 by Top_gun

Would love it unfortunately I live in Essex. Thanks anyway

This space-saver fits into the boot.
It’s from a ‘94 FD Rx7.
Central aperture 67.1mm
5x 114.3 bolt circle
16 inch mini-spare.
It’s tight, but can be filled with various bits & pieces and there’s room for a 20 litre soft bag to fit on top, provided it’s not full to capacity and therefore can be “squashed” to fit.

Where would the standard road wheel go, in the event of needing to fit the RX7 space saver? As I’m imagining that won’t fit in the boot.

Very pertinent question.
Probably wedged into the partially open boot whilst I divert to the nearest tyre fitters……
If I’m on a road trip, the boot rack will be fitted, and it could go there- hopefully not too far to get tyre fixed.
I know there are those that swear by the tyre repair kits……. but knowing my luck……the tyre will be sooooo damaged that this would be useless, or I’ll be by the side of a busy road, in the rain, waiting for the RAC/AA guys- who ( as you can imagine) hate the fact that so few modern cars come with a spare tyre as standard. Ask me how I know.
I’d really rather change the wheel and get somewhere safe than be stranded- especially if abroad. I would not have done our Belfast/Bilbao/Algarve return trip without a spare wheel.
At the end of the day it’s a personal choice.

@Bubble_1 Can you not try it as you have one?

How do you know :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve tried it. Doesn’t fit. I’ve ordered a space saver which will even if I have to hammer it in :joy:. The standard wheel does fit on the seat. Thanks for all your suggestions :+1:

Driving towards a car park in a hire car a few years ago in Lincoln- a new Fiesta with about 500 miles on the clock……. Front n/s tyre totally flat as we turned into a busy junction… had to stop on double yellows.
No spare.
No “can of gunk”
Phoned the help line.
Waited 2 hours for the RAC, fending off the extremely interested but understanding traffic wardens.
The RAC guy had done 5 flats that morning- he actually lifted us up at the front and towed us to Kwik-fit. He was courteous and efficient, but “somewhat exasperated “………

I am with davidcreswell1 on this, having first read an article in soft top hard top by some one, Roadster_Robbie ?, getting a flat in the back of beyond of Scotland.

If you are going long distance with a passenger a boot rack will be the only way of avoiding abandoning your 16" flat by the side of the road in any MX5 that can not accomodate a full size wheel in the boot. We all hope it won’t happen but I know if I was not prepared for such an eventuality it would be bound to happen.
