  4. General information and history…

Manufactured November 1989, Imported 2000, 145k kilometres, MOT due December.

I have owned this car since March 2012 and had some great outings in her and attended a lot of classic car shows including the MX5 Owners Club National and Spring Rallies but as I also have a newer, MK4, to use and maintain she just isn’t getting used much. I’ve been doing less than 1,000 miles a year over the last 5 years.

Being an import it has electric windows, power steering, LSD and air conditioning, although the air con needs re-gassing (I’ve never bothered with this as It’s a convertible after all).

This MX5 is in very good mechanical and structural condition for its age. The paintwork does need some attention and would benefit from a re-spray. There are some areas on the edge of panels where the paint has worn away and there are a number of small dents and scrapes. There is also some paint damage on the rear deck in front of boot lid where it looks like something has been dripped onto the paint. I have tried to show all these in the pictures.

It is in very good condition for its age, over 32 years. I had the rear of sills; both sides repaired in 2013 by an MX5 specialist (The MX5 Restorer) and at that time the sills etc. were treated with cavity wax injection. I have photographic evidence of this work available. I have also had rust work carried out to the windscreen surround, which again I have photos.

The front bumper and wings were removed and rust protection carried out not long after I bought her and I have regularly applied new underseal and cavity wax to appropriate areas. I use Bilthamber and Waxoil products.

Regularly serviced by myself as appropriate to miles covered, engine oil and filter, gearbox oil, diff oil. Rear brake callipers have both been replaced. Brake discs and pads were last changed in 2015, not many miles done since. New battery fitted July 2022. I had a new Exedy clutch fitted in 2016 along with release bearing and spigot bearing. I also had the engine rear oil seal and gearbox front oil seal changed and I have fitted a new clutch slave cylinder.

If you check the MOT history you will see that it failed last year on emissions but this was an error by the tester he had forgotten that being a pre 1992 car it requires a non-cat test. He re-issued a pass.

I have carried out some minor modifications over the years as follows,

MX5 Parts rear section S/S exhaust

Simple induction kit with cone filter (I have the original air box for re-fitting if required).

Gas bonnet struts.

Front lip.

Working heated leather seats from a MK2 and wired using OEM switches set into dash.

Door cards re-covered in red vinyl to match seats.

Gaz fixed height coilovers.

Genuine front strut brace.

Mk2 wind blocker.

Alarm, central locking and boot release.

I’ve tried to be as honest as I can in this advert and show any defects in the photos but if you have any questions or would like more photos please don’t hesitate to ask.
