1989 NA correct Spring to use

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NA
  2. I’m based near: London
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Rear Springs.

I fitted [KYB RA6283 Coil Spring] (325mm) on KYB Excel-G 341127 Shock absorber.

The rear ride height is now far too high, I have tried slackening off all the suspension, ARB and drop links to no avail.

Trying to keep the car looking original. Anyone fitted KYB Excel-G damper, which spring setup did you use?

I’m not familiar with the KYB parts but one of the most common issues with springs is fitting front and rear the wrong way round, leaving the rear sitting far too high.

I hope you won’t feel insulted if I suggest it, but it catches so many people out that it’s worth mentioning. The stock springs, and many aftermarket sets too, use a longer, softer spring on the rear and a shorter, stiffer spring on the front. People presumably fit the long spring on the long shock and vice versa without double-checking.

Hiya Martin,

Not insulted, thanks for the info.

I fitted KYB Excel-G 341127 Shock absorber which is for the rear axle and rear axle springs, https://www.partsinmotion.co.uk/car-parts/steering-suspension/coil-springs/kybcoilspringrearra6283-detail

I have contacted the spring company and I am awaiting a response.
