1994 mx5 1.6i clutch release bearing noise?!

Basically when you depress the clutch there’s a slight grind, when you engage 1/2/3 gears there’s a noisy grind at bite.

I assume it’s the release bearing? I’m planning a clutch change and gearbox oil change too at the same time so obviously would change the release bearing too.

Just didn’t know if there was anything else it could be.

Cheers

Here’s a link to the video of my car engaging gears

If that’s the noise at 22 seconds it very much sounds like a thrust bearing, do a full clutch replace complete with a (if it has one) spigot bearing.

Yes that’s the noise when pulling forward at 22. Ok cool. I will get that sorted ASAP. Thank you

Quick question should I go OEM or aftermarket?

Found this kit which includes thrust bearing clutch plate pressure plate and release bearing made in Germany.

 Any good?

Yes, get that one.

Looks good but no mention of guarantee and no reviews. MX5Parts have been dealing with ILM for many years so this must be a new addition. I would call them and check who the actual manufacturer of the parts is before buying. Usual suspect is exedy  but with the kit in the link you would need to source the spiggot bearing separately(less than a tenner)

It is good that the MX5Parts ILM three part system usually on offer also includes the very necessary 4th part - spiggot/pilot bearing. I had this go on my MK1 and the noise was unbearable - always replace it.

Clutch replacement is not an easy job and likely to cost around £200 in labour.

Can only really make out the one quite brutal noise on your video. I can tell you that it is not the nails on backboard squealing of a seizing pilot bearing so assume it has something to do with the release bearing or possibly damage to the pressure plate. Either way if your clutch has started making that noise on a regular basis, it needs replacing before complete failure.

I will get it done ASAP. I’ve swapped 2 BMW engines before so I’m not shy of hard work and a clutch replacement or 5 hahaha
Used to own a Honda civic vti with a turbo, used to destroy clutches hahaha.
I will double check the warranty on it
Thanks again guys
