Hello! And thank you looking at my post.
I saw a 1997 Mazda Mx-5 1.8 UK Mk1 in classic red and fell in love and well it’s now on the driveway as my new project. But I have hit a wall already, insurance companies don’t like 18 year olds driving Mx-5’s around so at the moment I’m getting Insurance quotes of £5000+ for 3000 Miles Annual. This is when I’m entering that the Mx-5 is Garaged, has a immobilizer, in a safe area of where I live and also with 2 other drivers with 25+ years of driving with no claims against them.
Hoping anyone can shine some light on any insurers who don’t see I’m a Teen who is a idiot like others and charges thousands and instead give a good value quote. Yet to ring Adrian Flux but have tried comparison sites and was recommend Admiral who quoted double what others were quoting. Only going to be using the Mx-5 to got to Car meets and some shows, not to use as a daily seeing I have a Peugeot 307 for that.
Anyone with past good insurers with young drivers I would love to here about.
And here is my new found love-

Thanks in advance
Jordan
Hi Jordan,
You need to try for Classic Car insurance, the comparison websites do not work well for the insurance you need. There are a number of these insurers advertising in STHT. I cannot recommend any particular one

(05/05/2016) Update-
So a little update with insurance hunting and well… Its not going well at all. Just got off the phone with Adrian Flux, said i was apart of the club and said my cheapest quote so far was £3000. So I waited and she came back to and said £6000. My mouth dropped. Going to try Lancaster next but if anyone knows of any good Insurers then please let me know ![]()
Also sorry about posting this topic in the wrong sub forum last time ![]()
And I was a little miffed at being quoted just over £200 for an import Mk1. My last Mk1 (UK) cost £114 around 5 years ago. 62 yrs old BTW
Anyways try A-Plan, they aren’t on comparison sites and it’s best to ring their Thatcham branch so I was told. Good luck, hoping they can come up with something better but I reckon it’sd the underwriters that determine what’s what risk wise.
Try RH insurance, I’ve always used them for classics, so long as you keep the mileage down to no more than 3,000, (2,000 would be better), you may get a sensible quote.
For example, I’m paying £75 a year fully comp (with breakdown) on my Mustang as a second car.
A few years ago they offered the only sensible quote for a MK1 Metro for my late partners grandson, was a third of what others were charging.
Good luck with the hunt, you could also try looking in practical classics magazine, they have a load of insurers advertising in there.
Maybe try one of the insurers that install a “black box” in your car to monitor your driving?
