- My model of MX-5 is: __ 1997 NA 1.8is
- I’m based near: __ Ipswich
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ Suspension / Steering Vibration
Hi, I’m after some advice please. When driving our NA at speed on a duel carriage way or motorway we’re experiencing what feels like unbalanced wheel shake. The steering shake is only slight but you can feel the vibration through the car. I had all four wheels re-balanced which didn’t alleviate the symptoms, then I replaced the shocks and springs (I had an uprated set from a previous car) and still the same symptoms. So balanced wheels, replaced shocks and springs, my question is, could it be worn bushes?
Any other suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks James
I would check if a warped break disc is causing one of the calipers to catch with each rotation. You can tell if one of the alloys is warming up more than the other. I had this problem on my bmw. Another possible culprit is the prop shaft may be out of balance.

How old are the tyres? I had the same on my 94 Enos, no vibration up to 65, then vibrated to just over 70 then smooth again. The tyres had plenty of tread left but were over 10 years old. Maybe they had developed a flat spot from being stored over winter… Who knows, but fresh rubber sorted it.

I bought a 97 about a year ago and had shake at certain speeds. I started with a front strut tower brace and it helped a bit. I did new doo bushings, again some help. I got a new set of tires and the car was magically improved . Vredestein Quatrac 195/15R15 82v. It is also very quiet. Got them from Tire Rack.
