2003 MX5 key fob faulty? Please help a newbie out!

Hi guys,

Im a newbie to the forum and the MX5 family. I just bought my lovely MX5 last week. The issue is the key fob  dosent work. I bought a new battery for it and it worked a few times. But then stopped. I played around with the element and it hasn’t worked since. I was thinking of buy this key fob (see link below) but its slightly different and try to tune it in myself as it says you can. Can anyone give me any advice asap

Thank you!

Hi, Welcome to the FUN

Can`t help with the fob prob  but someone will be along soon who can

Thank you

John,

There doesn’t seem to be any link in your post to the replacement key fob. Also you should post details of the year etc of the car as the advice will be different depending on MK and year etc.

Steven

That would make sense Steve thank you. And I can get in and out of the car as normal. I took it to an electrical guy who said there was no contact. He tried to adjust it but still not working. He said it may need reprogrammed by the mazda dealer but I doubt that as it was working at the start.

My last resort is maybe trying a good battery. If that fails then im relying on any advice here. Thanks again Steve and anyone else who can help?

John

Did you sort out your remote fob?

What year/model of MX5 do you own - just trying to work out if this is the factory supplied remote system for the MK2.5 car(2001 on) or an aftermarket system fitted to the earlier cars.

If the fob is a Visteon 41703(MK2.5), it is the only one that will do the job.

Hi

Yeah it is the  Visteon 41703. And no, at the moment its just a fancy key ring that does nothing

You need to get yours working then or buy a replacement from me:-)

Take it apart and carefully take each of the three buttons apart using a very small precision screwdriver to gently prize off the metal covers.  Clean the components and put back together again.  Be very careful with this as easy to lose the small parts.  I have cleaned dozens so used to it. Check the voltage on the battery is 2.8 - 3.1 volts. It is highly unlikely that all buttons would give a problem at the same time - I would personally expect the problem to be battery related.

If it has worked recently, there should be no problem with pairing with the keyless unit behind the glovebox.

This is a robust remote. The buttons usually work even though many of them no longer click.

Cleaning the buttons and making sure the battery is good is all you can really do with these. I do this as a matter of course as well as cleaning up the case and button cover.

And more importantly, did John ever get his key working? We might never know!
