The exhaust back box is starting to go so I’m thinking of replacing it with a stainless one. Ideally it shouldnt be much louder than a standard one and not off the scale pricewise.
Can anyone reccomend one they have actual experience of?.

I fitted the mx5parts SS back box a few years ago on my Mk2. Not overly loud, a nice subtle sporty note. It was a few years ago, had NC’s for nearly 9 years now so no recent experience of the Mk2 back box, it looks the same though, below link.
MX5 Parts will probably have a 10% discount and free postage on orders over the weekend of the Spring Rally, so it would be to your advantage if you could wait till then. I have one of theirs on my NB bought a few years back. It’s slightly louder than standard with quite a decent sound.
I had seen the MX5 Parts one - ithats my favoured one so far. I know its stainless - does it rust at all? (I know taht sounds silly but I have had a stainless exhust on another car rust)
When is the Spring Rally? My MOT is due 10th May and also I’m going to Japfest so would like to get it replaced by then if possible.
It’s on the 6th and 7th May. Discounted prices often start the day before. For details of the actual event (near Edinburgh) see Club Spring Event
I’ve had my exhaust a few years now and certainly no sign of rust on it.

Got a Cobalt rear box on my 2003. Not overly loud. Been on 5 years with no signs of corrosion.Purchased from Moss if i remember correctly
No.
It will outlast the car.
Your previous one must have been low grade stuff.
Just ordered the recommended one above from MX5Parts - £227.70 including a new gasket. I’d like to fit stainless bolts and nuts too - does anyone know the size or reccomend where I can get them from?
Thanks again for your help - I’ll post pictures up when I fit it
Just arrived - can’t wait to fit it (hopefully today if the rain stops!)
BTW Dont order a gasket for it (I did) as it comes with one and a couple of bolts too
Be VERY very careful cleaning it. The exhaust pipe tip encased on the chrome outer, is very sharp and quite capable of opening up a finger or 3.
Or they were.
I’ve just checked and it’s fine Not had opportunity to fit it yet but had a good look underneath and cleaned off som eof the rust from where backbox joins the rest of the exhaust. Here’s hoping the weather is better tomorrow.
A busy lunch hour today…
The 2 nuts securing the old back on were wire brushed down and some loose rust chipped off with a hammer. I used my trusty impact gun which loosened them off in seconds.
I sprayed all 3 rubber hangers with WD40 to ease the extraction of teh hangers out of them.
I had some spare exhaust hangers so to speed up the job I just sliced through the joint end hanger with a stanley knife then after seperating the joint the exhaust box could quite easily be pulled out of teh other 2 rubber hangers (exhaust exit end).
Again I cleaned up the exposed pipe using a wire brush attachment on a drill. There was still some of the remaining gasket on the pipe so I used a hammer and flat bladed scre driver to chisel it off.
Fitment was surprising easy and literally took a couple of minutes. I just poked hangers on the exit end into the 2 rubbers then lifted the other end up onto the 2 exposed bolts. Once they were on the final rubber hanger could be twisted enough to go over the final hanger prong.
Hardest part of the job was one of teh nuts got stuck in my impact socket which took longer to retrieve than fitting the exhaust - typical!
The bolts in the exhaust were stuck fast (maybe attached) so reused the existing bolt/nut arrangement. One other thing to note is that the I didnt use the gasket that came with it as its too large so actually got to use the extra gasket I bought.
Anyway, looks and sounds great - not too loud - so thank you for teh reccomendation
as expected MX5 Parts are now doing a sale with this about £25 cheaper than when I bought it last week
Worth ordering one whilst theyre chyeap if your thinking of getting one.
