Hello forum members. i recently test drove the 2.0l 184 mx5 and I was really impressed with the increased revs and the overall smoothness of gear changes. Even my wife commented on both these things. So I’ve decided to take the plunge and have part exed my 2016 mx5 recaro. i haven’t seen many comments on the forum so i’m wondering if there are many owners who’ve changed their nd4’s for the latest upgraded car and what their thoughts are?
I had an extended test drive the other day and was hugely impressed with the new engine. Just like the smaller one but with more power whereas the ‘old’ one was lacking in character and rather bland. There were a lot of little improvements too, e.g. (i) a louder ‘clicker’ for the indicators to tell me I’d left them on again after exiting a roundabout and (ii) a much improved font for the gauges and a redesigned layout for the left hand one which made the info much easier to read. It struck me that Mazda is making small changes which are real improvements and not money saving ventures. The upgrades were enough to make me seriously consider swapping my one year old Z-Sport (which looks lovely but has never inspired me like the 1.5 did during two years I had it) for the GT Sport Nav+ but it depends on the cost to change which will definitely make a hole in my pension!
I upgraded from 2.0L 2017 ND st to a 2.0L 2019 ND st (gt sport)… mostly for the engine improvements, new colour change (eternal blue) and the gearbox.
My 2017 gearbox always felt notchy every morning until the gearbox was warmed up… my gearbox was actually a 2916 pre modified gearbox (as the car was a dealer showroom model for sometime) the engine although great felt somewhat reluctant to rev.
The new engine feels so much more driveable and much more willing to rev than the old version… and whilst no Porsche it does give the car a much better feeling of power An more punch. The gearbox is soo much better/ smoother.
The reversing camera, whilst not ‘hd’ quality (as some moan about?) is great for just seeing what behind you as you reverse… which is actually really useful I have found.
I am very happy that I made the change… please note I was very happy with my older Mx5 ND but the 2019 is even better.
i added CarPlay too which is also a good improvement over the standard infotainment System for me too.
if you are in the market for a 2019 have a look at the 30th anniversary limted edition that is about to be revealed soon… there are a few posts and tidbits about it about already.
Its going to be orange, with recaros with orange stitching, orange brembo calipers… ray wheels (most of this has been leaked)… worth a look/ investigation before placing an order?
Thanks for the replies chaps. Your views fit in with my thoughts from a test drive so that’s good to read.
Rodders - ive don’t the deal with my local Mazda garage but thanks for the suggestion
Markmoddy - yeah I’d thought about waiting for the 30th edition but I got a good deal for the new one so have placed an order. I’m excited for the 30th edition though and hopefully someone local will buy one so I get to see it in the flesh
I had one of the very first 2015 2 litre N.D sport nav, very pleased with it i drove about 24000 miles in three years, then sold it to a freind,it gave me no trouble and was amazing to drive, but i fancied the new slightly higher power engine etc,and much stronger and improved gearbox,my only main worry that made my final decision to change now was,the slight gearbox failure problem, three years old warrantry expired,no extended warrantry from mazda going to look at them on a case by case,i just do not need that slight worry,so decided to start again.
I have heard there is a mark 5 coming out very different in 2021,i intend to get one of them on order as soon as poss.
I never most of the time have the roof on,it is true genuine open top sports car, that is so amazing,i have borrowed an R.F and most certainly did not like that, one most def not a true open top sports car,but mainly when the top is so called open the buffeting i think is really bad actually hurts your ears, but horses for coarses free world at moment buy what you like.
