2018 MX-5 ND2 Underbody protection, yes or no?

Hi all.
I remember when working at a main Mazda Dealership and seeing the underside of many NB/NC MX-5’s where some underbody components did rust quite a bit - never saw any serious corrosion, but just asking the question… Should I get mine done with something like Dinitrol? Opinions welcome…

If you are going to keep it a long time then YES. If not then NO.

But if you like messing about with cars then a DIY job is cheap and will give you many hours of quality fun time.

As Malc says - depends if it’s a keeper or you want to pay it forward.

There was a good write up on here about a couple of ND’s that have been DIY undersealed up here, the pictures seem to have gone in the photobucket debacle unfortunately!

If you are keeping it then rust prevention is a must. Even if you plan to sell it in a few years it will show the next owner your car was looked after and potentially increae its value or make a sale easier.

I would and I did. Mine was 6 months old when I bought it and hadn’t seen a winter, and like new underneath. I got MX5 Restorer to do it. As it was fairly pristine to start with they put clear wax on all over rather that clarting it up with black underseal.

It still looks the same at coming up 4 years, although it’s mainly a fair weather car. At the time it cost under £400 and I’m not sorry I did it. I do intend keeping it a long time but I expect it to make a sale easier if the time comes sooner. Most buyers will be aware that Mazda doesn’t have a great reputation on rust resistance so should see value in it.

Just do it. Even if you don’t keep it, you can use the fact that you’ve done it to negotiate the price up.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I’m living near Mansfield in North Nottinghamshire now - Anyone know of someone good not too far from me? I will obviously take a look on Google to see what’s out there…

I got some of those plastic drive on race ramps, so I could get under easily, pressure washed it all out, snow foamed it also.
Then when it was dry, I gently wire wooled the rear subframe, masked off, them black spray hammerite’d it.
Mines a 2018, has seen 2 winters and had some surface rust on the rear subframe.
