I’m upgrading from my 2017 RF to a 2020 model on 1 September with the new 70 plate. Moving from machine grey to eternal blue.
Cannot decide between the standard alloys on the Sport Tech grade and the optional black BBS alloys.
Anyone had this decision and any recommendations?
- My model of MX-5 is: 2017 RF 2.0 Sport Nav
- I’m based near: Surrey
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: alloys for 2020 model
There are plenty of other choices out there if you don’t want to stick with Mazda only options.
I had Bola B1Rs on my RF. These were 17 x 7.5 ET40 with 215/45/17 tyres
Out of the Mazda choice, my preference would be the BBS option.

BBS look better than the standard wheels, depending if black goes with Eternal Blue nicely.
In theory you could order forged alloy Rays ZE40 as per AE30 but marked “Mazda Global MX-5 Cup” on rim for 345USD each from Flis Performance in the States, even with customs and tax they should be reasonable, if they will ship to UK.
If you have the big brake / Brembo on the front you will have to watch out for clearance with some non-OEM 17” wheels.
Enjoy the car when you get it.
In my opinion ,and it’s only my opinion,I don’t like the standard alloys which are available for the mk4.The Bolas look good, and look more substantial, but i dont like black, what about Hyper Silver if they do them ? I have a mk 3.5 in Met red with new alloys as such and had so many compliments regarding them.Send pic when you’ve decided on your choice.
These chunky looking 17 " Bola wheels look really great, especially on the black RF. Gives the car some more presence…very nice!
