I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: How much to expect to pay for new brakes, and where to go
Hi all, first-time poster and MX-5 owner. I bought my ND on PCP back in March and have been delighted with it since. Noticed a grinding noise from the wheels that’s been getting louder over the past few weeks, so took it to my dealer today for a diagnostic. They’ve advised that it needs new discs and pads all round - 90% perished up front, and 80% at the rear. Their quote is just north of £1200 - quite the surprise, and badly timed after Christmas!
The service manager (perhaps oddly?) recommended shopping around, implying I could get a much better deal from an independent garage if I’m not fussed about the service history being solely through Mazda. I hope to keep it at the end of my finance contract (in three years…) so, honestly, am not too fussed.
Please could I ask for recommendations for specialists/independent garages within a couple of hours of NW London (just off the bottom of the M1, if that’s at all helpful) and a rough guide of what to expect to pay? I’d be looking to go with OEM parts - PCP explicitly forbids modifications, though a track-friendly pad might just be allowed - but at a much more reasonable price. I believe I have the standard brakes rather than the Brembos.
Thanks in advance!
Sounds very iffy.
If you go on MX-5 parts,
I just ‘priced up’ 2l (non brembo) OEM (genuine) front and rear pads and front and rear disks, and got a price of just under £500 for the lot. So even if they got them at MX-5- parts prices (which I doubt they will, they’;; probably get them cheaper), they are asking, what, £700 labour to fits front and rear disks and pads!

As a Club Member the OP can also get another 10% off those prices.
Buying parts and getting a local garage to fit them would seem like a good way to go, hopefully someone more local can suggest one.

I recently fitted my front discs and pads in a 30min lunch break at home, so for a workshop its an hour for both. Its very easy to do, maybe ask in your local MX-5 Group if someone is willing to help you. Its amazing what help you can get for a pack of beers.
Pattern replacement brake parts are not modifications. Does the PCP explicitly state OEM SKU or to OEM specification?
What do they mean by perished? What is perished both pads and discs?
How many miles has the car covered?
In my experience I’ve replaced front discs/pads more often than any rears. Having said that rears can rust more easily rather than wear out necessitating an early change.
Brembo discs pads are fitted to my ND, they are of good quality, a known brand, so I don’t see why the PCP company would reject them being fitted. Also if they insist on OEM (Mazda) they would probably insist on ‘professional’ Mazda approved garage, who knows?
I don’t have a paper copy of the docs and can’t access the online version right now… many apologies. From memory, I think any VAT-registered garage using OE-specification (rather than OE SKU) parts should be okay, but I’d need to double check before doing anything for sure. Does look like there’s an opportunity to save money by going for an OE-spec kit though.
Dealer’s report says the front discs are scored and rear discs heavily corroded, while the pads are “90% worn” and the rears “80% worn”. 18,500ish miles.
I need to double check my PCP paperwork when I can to see if it’s OE-spec or OE-SKU parts (from memory OE-spec, by an approved garage is fine, but I haven’t read the docs since signing in March and now can’t find them…) but would want to be sure before paying for anything! Cheers for the shout on the Brembo bits, will have a look if I can go that route.
I’m wondering when you hand the car back to Lucy the hand back girl, whether she’ll be analysing the disks and pads to ascertain if they’re OEM, all while whatsapping her mates to see if they’ve heard how Diondra’s date went.
I would try Japex in Kings Langley near Hemel if you can make it there.
Ex Mazda mechanics who can update the Mazda service history records so it would then show as a Mazda service.
Great guys who know their Japanese cars
Thank you - they’re only 10 minutes further away than my dealer (Milcars in Watford) so I’ll drop them a line!
I’d be interested to know how the £1200 quote from the dealer breaks down, how much for parts, labour and VAT.
You said that the Service Manager mentioned a Mazda service history, this price doesn’t include a service does it? If you got it in March, it could be about due a service.
I got a quote for the rears only from Japex back in August (same parts as yours)
£114+VAT labour, £118.33+VAT for discs and pads (they use Pagid and won’t fit customer supplied parts), totaling at £278.80.
Parts costs are similar for the fronts so you’d probably be under £600 for fronts and rears at Japex
Have you used Milcars before and been ok with them? Looking to move to them (car still under warranty) from another near Milton Keynes who put the wrong oil in the car ![]()
I’ve just replaced my front disks, pads and calipers and sliders did the job myself and it came to just over £400 and took me 2 hours or so, id look at doing the job yourself to save a load of money if you have basic knowledge and tools and space its an easy enough job to do.
Crickey! My brake discs and pads were still fine after 25K miles on my 2019 ND. I replaced all the pads anyway using MX-5 Parts supplied Mazda Original pads for £200 even though they didn’t really need replacing. Once you have got the calipers off to fit the pads it’s an easy job to change the brake disks anyway. While you are at it, it would be worth changing the brake fluid as well if it hasn’t been changed before.
Really good intel, thank you. Under £600 would be great! I’ll see what they come back with…
Nope, just the brakes – service is due in March. I suspect, given parts costs, they’re charging a LOT on labour, but I don’t have a proper breakdown on the form. Maybe I should give them a ring and ask for a more detailed explanation of how they reached that cost…
The showroom itself is lovely - coffee machines and a tidy seating area to wait for bits to be done, and the staff are great too. Really easy to book the car in and they were understanding when I rang to say I was running late. I can’t speak for the quality of their work, though, having not had a service or anything done by them yet (due in March).
WHo is the dealer?
