52mm gauges

Does anyone know where I can get a 52mm engine temp gauge, clock, and voltmeter that match?  Ideally with a black face and amber lume.

I’ve been looking and I’m struggling to find anyone who sells all 3 that cosmetically match, to fill the single DIN under my stereo.  Have tried eBay etc.

This is the temp gauge i use because you can change the bulb also to what ever colour you want to match the dail colour?but you may want something with ablack face to match whatb you already have, and find a clock close to???

Not sure about the amber lighting, but Demon Tweeks have a good selection of gauges in their motorsports catalogue:

VDO gauges seem to be supplied with red and green filters to change the white backlighting. For the CAI gauges optional coloured diffusers are available but no mention if this includes amber.

CAI contact details here, might be worth a call to ask about amber filters?

Apologies for derailing the the thread, but how difficult is it to change the instrumentation backlight colour?

I rather like the blue backlighting/red needles on my wife’s Golf Mk5 and would like to do the same on my Roadster. Is it simply a case of changing the green bulbs for blue ones, or do some of the instrument overlays have a green filter applied to the reverse side which would make the conversion difficult?

It depends, really.  I’ve done my NA interior to amber as I can’t stand the factory green.

Current dash cluster colour’s provided by green silicon sleeves on the 4x 501 bulbs that light it up from the rear of the cluster, and also a green tint to some of the dials (not all of them, strangely - it’s so the 4 fixed bulbs give an approximately even light for all the dials).  Despite forum posts to the contrary, I’ve not been able to remove this green backing by using acetone-free nailvarnish remover on the rear of the dials and didn’t fancy trying sanding it - you’d want a spare set on hand if you did this in case you messed up, in which case you might as well just fit aftermarket dial faces in the first place.

Options - if you’re keeping stock faces, you can fit blue bulbs (I’d suggest the wideangle LED ones off eBay - the sort that look like a big fat LED rather than the ones designed to be forward facing) and the blue will shine through the green.  It looks a little murky though, but it works.  Any other colour won’t shine through it properly.

You can change needle colour by removing needles, wiping rear with acetone-free nailvarnish, and then repainting the rear with Tamiya red acrylic model paint or similar.  This is very easy and looks very smart when done.

Having fitted blue LEDs and test fitted red needles on my mate Jon’s car - the red needles don’t work with this setup, they’re too dark.  On a brightly-lit cluster they look great.

What I’d recommend is changing the gauge faces at the same time - Lockwood do some with matching HVAC panels that are pretty good, or if you can wait for a couple of weeks for my Secret Gauge Face Project you’ll have another, free option!  If you go with aftermarket gauge faces that let a decent amount of light through then red needles and blue LEDs would give you something pretty close to VAG instrumentation.

Changing the heater panel is harder - again, you can fit blue LEDs and it’ll work but be murky.  These bulbs are a smaller size - I got a TrueColour kit off eBay that had 4x dash LEDs and 2x HVAC leds.  Not fitted these yet to Jon’s car.  On mine I fitted an amber/red Lockwood set, which looks great.  DO NOT FORGET THE A/C BUTTON if you have air con - it lights up green too!  This job’s a PITA - have some solvent ready to remove the old sticky stuff when you peel off the original HVAC graphics - note this is non-reversible as you’re going to be ripping it off.

You can change the hazard illumination colour by removing the hazard switch, popping out the bulb from the side inspection hole and painting the bulb with the same acrylic model paint - or fit a late model black one.

Ashtray bulb can be painted at the same time.

The only switch I can’t change the colour of is the fog lamp switch which lights up green.  It doesn’t dismantle but am planning to swap this for a later model one with integral lights-on indicator to fix this.

If you want some detailed pointers on how to dismantle dash/console etc then give me a shout, I’ve got it down pat now.  Given I’ve already gone through the pain of doing it first time then it’s really not a very tricky job to change the interior lights.

try here http://www.greengauges.com I got two gauges from them to sit above my radio A clock and a volt meter they were excellent and haven’t missed a beat in three years.

if you wire them correctly they will fade and dim with the rest of your clocks etc and are very nearly a perfect match (once designed) with your existing ones.

Thanks, Ric. If I go for the white Lockwood overlays with blue filtering, do I still need to use blue bulbs or can I simply use white bulbs?

Looking forward to the secret dial face project. I have just bought a colour laser printer and have often thought that it would be nice to put it to good use for something like this.

If you’ve got Lockwood dials then clear bulbs will do the job nicely.  They’re very well made, if a little conservative.Â
