A bit of luck…

Unless they are 17” all standard mx5 rims are worthless. You see 16” originals unsold for months at silly prices. Nobody wants them despite being of good quality and quite light?
It was four hours all round but I couldn’t resist someone who didn’t need the money and just wanted the space back. So, £50 for some very tidy rims with Kumho 51 all round. Eight years old but I just wanted the rims. However, despite the age they were in good fettle. One had a slow puncture. I spent most of the morning trying to find it.
Just for once we are as tooled up as the pros. Either immersion or a very Suddy spray should get it,
I only found a very subtle leak after screwing on the cap. I’d done the usual thing of spitting on the valve with no result. Just after spraying the whole f@cking tyre with soap suds and giving up to send to ATS, I was just screwing on the plastic cap and just before it seated was this little bubble….
Chaps, I’m so pleased. New valve and I’ve got four Kumbo51 to play with. My Rikens were fine until sixty but got twitchy after. The Kumho’s are uncomfortable in comparison but are so solid once flying. £50 well spent I’m thinking.

A garage near me had a set of mk3 alloys on their scrap pile I did think about asking for them but then they would just sit in my garage next to my other set!

Yer, two sets of spare wheels is a bit pit stop :slightly_smiling_face:

I did take a real good look for any defects on these eight year olds. I’ve booked in for a free check at a local Indy tyre shop just to be sure I’ve not missed anything.
I noted the little Mazda logo center is much less tarnished than on my original wheels. Maybe another clue why these old tyres have none of the usual signs of old age. Just accidentally well stored?
It’s been an interesting lesson being able to swap out one set of tyres for another. The Riken were great until I had the Kumho….
After a tentative blast I’m now quite confident with them.
I was all over them with trying to find the leak and there was not a blemish….

Tyres got checked by a Pro today( thanks Penwith Tyres) interestingly he didn’t bring up the age issue. It was all about condition.
When I was examining them myself I noticed that two had a much sharper edge in the three center blocks and also had worn down a little more. I’m guessing these were the driven wheels?
