A Blast From The Past

Anyone old enough to remember these?

Yes. They were terrible flexy things with a hood that was like putting up a tent. I’m all for nostalgia but some things are better forgotten.

The Cavalier was a decent car in its class. Long geared , which was unusual then , comfy and decently quick. Never tried the convertible -like most chopped saloons it was not a looker, and few were seen. But possibly more were around in period than the hilariously daft Evoque convertible now , the answer to a question nobody was asking .

The Cavalier was fine. The convertible was verging on the home-made.

Good friend had a nearly new one way back. Top down, we went for a blast over the Dukes Pass…or as much a blast as the chassis could offer. We met a bunch of big power bikes coming towards us who were not for giving in, so we had no option but to head for a verge, and a mahoosive deep drain. The car went into it rather than over with a mighty thud at which point the windscreen fractured at the Pax side bottom. Anyway, drove gently back to Glasgow and got another screen in a couple of hours. That’s what happens if you chop then under-engineer the compensation. He sold it shortly after. Suspension needed a bit of TLC as well.
